STRONG BOUNCE-BACK PERFORMANCE EARNS CSI WIN OVER BROOKLYN, 83-66

Staten Island, NY  |  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team got back on the winning track this afternoon with an 83-66 win over Brooklyn College.  The Dolphins bounced back from Wednesday's loss against Hunter with a strong performance in today's game to improve to 6-8 while the defeat dropped Brooklyn to 8-5 on the season.

It was a quick start to the game for Chanel Jemmott of the Bulldogs and a red-hot start for Jada Rogers of the Dolphins as Jemmott scored the first four points for Brooklyn while Rogers scored the first nine for CSI.  A go-ahead three-pointer by Rogers four minutes into the game gave CSI a 9-8 lead that they held until the final minute of the opening quarter when Brooklyn pulled ahead 17-15.  Trailing by two in the final minute, a pair of trips to the line for the Dolphins that resulted in four makes from the charity stripe put the CSI ahead 21-19 when the buzzer sounded to end the first.

With her team ahead by two at the start of the second Deidre Foster did everything she could to keep the Dolphins in front during quarter number two.  Foster opened the frame with a quick basket to make it 23-19, a score that would stand until the 6:57 mark when she converted a fastbreak layup to put CSI ahead by six.  A Kristina Arvelo jumper made it 27-19 before Brooklyn finally registered their first make of the quarter with 5:22 on the clock.

Arvelo and Foster continued to power the Dolphins offense beyond the midway point of the quarter as Arvelo connected from beyond the arc to extend the lead to nine while Foster added a jumper of her own soon after to give the Dolphins an eleven-point advantage.  It was it this point that what had been a stagnant Brooklyn offense seemed to turn things around as they promptly went on a 6-0 run over the course of only two offensive possessions to pull back within 5.  However, the Dolphins regained control heading into the intermission and outscored the Bulldogs 7-2 during the final three minutes of the half to take a ten-point, 39-29 lead into the locker room.

Foster led the Dolphins in scoring at the break with 10 and in rebounding with 6 while Rogers' tremendous start to the game put her next in line with 9 points.  Brooklyn was led in both points and rebounding by Jemmott who scored 10 and pulled in 4 boards while Taylor George added 7 points and recorded the only made three for the Bulldogs on seven attempts.  This poor shooting was in stark contrast to the numbers put up by the Dolphins in the half as CSI shot nearly 44% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc as opposed to only 34.5% and 14.3% for Brooklyn.

The two teams exchanged baskets early in the third quarter and it remained a ten-point game until around the six-minute mark.  It was here that Rogers got back in the points column to put the Dolphins ahead by twelve, their biggest lead to that point.  Brooklyn continued to remain within striking distance, not allowing the lead to extend beyond twelve until the quarter concluded with a Kayla Schmitter layup to put the Dolphins ahead 60-47.  Schmitter scored six of the Dolphins 21 points in the third giving her double-digits entering the final frame.

Brooklyn opened the fourth-quarter scoring with an Ericka James three to get back within ten, but Rogers answered immediately for the Dolphins to push the lead back to twelve.  This lead would hold up until one last Bulldogs run in the final minutes breifly put the outcome into question.  Four quick points at the line for Brooklyn would reduce the CSI lead to eight with three minutes to play, but the Dolphins would not let things get any closer as they ultimately closed the game strong to win 83-66.

Jemmott and Taylor George, Brooklyn's two leading scorers with 25 and 13 respectively, both fouled out of the game before they could do more damage down the stretch.  For CSI, a well-balanced scoring effort saw five players score in double-figures, McEwan, Rogers, Diana Todaro, Schmitter, and Foster.  For Foster, it was a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double that gave her the lead for CSI in each of those categories.  Schmitter and McEwan feasted from the free-throw line as well shooting a combined 17-20 with Schmitter making a perfect eight-of-eight.

The Dolphins continue their run against the CUNYAC on Wednesday night when the Lehman College Lightning visit The Tank for a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.  The women will tip things off at 5:30 followed shortly after by the men.
