New York, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team stayed hot, winning their fourth-straight and their seventh contest in their last eight games, as they rolled by Baruch College on the road tonight, 74-59. CSI improved to 9-8 overall, while the Bearcats fell to 11-4.
CSI was able to overturn an early deficit, taking over midway through the first quarter and kept the Bearcats at bay the rest of the way to score the eventual 15-point win, completing their first go-around against CUNYAC teams.
A Frances Snyder bucket gave Baruch an early 4-2 advantage, but CSI would respond in the first stanza with a 12-0 run, as CSI took a 14-8 lead into the first intermission.
Brianna Robisky started the run with a three, and after lay-ups by
Diana Todaro and
Jada Rogers, Robisky would hit another three to accentuate the lead.
CSI never trailed from there, but the Bearcats did rally back to tie the score at 20-20 on a three-point play by Melinda Spahiu, but again CSI answered with a surge, going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by three Todaro shots from in-close to put CSI up by double-digits. The Dolphins would eventually take a 12-point edge before settling for a 37-30 lead going into halftime.
Six-straight CSI points from
Megan McEwan via the three-pointer gave CSI a quick 43-30 edge in the third quarter, and BC would not get the back back down to single digits as CSI continued to put the pressure on defensively while powering inside for lay-ups. With time winding down in the third frame, an
Elena Demontreux jumper gave CSI their biggest lead to that point, 60-43, and it seemed the game was out of reach.
The Dolphins would eventually go up by as many as 20 points on two occasions, the final time at 5:25 via another McEwan three to make it 70-50. From there, CSI worked the shot clock while Baruch scurried to get back into the game, cutting the deficit to 13 thanks to a 9-2 run over the next three minutes, but CSI was able to buckle down defensively and did not allow a point in the final 2:02, to ultimately prevail, 74-59.
McEwan finished with a team-high 16 points to lead CSI, adding four assists.
Jada Rogers banked in 15 points, while Todaro notched 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, adding five assists as well. The Dolphins shot 43.5% for the game and 81.3% from the line. For Baruch, they were led by
Daniela Zirpolo's 16 points, adding seven rebounds. Spahiu added a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. The rebound count was even at 41-41 while CSI won the battle of the turnovers, finishing a +5 in the category, 17-12.
CSI will next play on Saturday at 1 PM against John Jay College at The Tank at CSI. The game will br preceded by the Women's Basketball Alumni Game at 11 AM. CSI won the opening game in the two game series against the Bloodhounds back on January 4, 71-58.
