New York, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team rolled their way to another big win, their sixth-straight, soaring over City College of New York, 88-46. The win completed a season-series sweep by CSI over CCNY, as they advanced to 11-8 overall after an 0-6 start to the season, while the Beavers fell to 2-17.
CSI led from start to finish in this one, and powered by a strong first quarter were able to build their advantage steadily throughout the 40 minutes.
Elena Demontreux scored CSI's first points, a three-pointer, just 14 seconds into the game, and CSI rode that wave to a 23-11 advantage by the end of the first quarter. CSI used an 11-2 run to seize control midway through the first, guided along by two-straight baskets by
Kayla Schmitter, one a three-pointer. CSI ended the stanza on a 9-3 run as well, using a
Megan McEwan three and two
Deidre Foster baskets to help it along.
After a Tianna Fumasoli three brought CCNY back to within single digits with 7:00 to go in the half, CSI caught fire and ignited a quick, 7-0, response, finished by inside lay-ups from
Diana Todaro and
Jada Rogers. The Dolphins then ended the frame on a 6-0 run to take a 48-30 lead at the half, as Foster and Todaro converted again on the interior.
CSI seemed to slam the door on the Beavers to start the second half, racing out to an 8-0 run to bulge the lead up to 56-30, finalized by a
Kristina Arvelo three. Another Demontreux three gave CSI their biggest lead at 3:59, 67-34, and from there CSI simply out-paced CCNY to pad the lead.
Outscoring the Beavers, 18-8, in the final stanza, CSI at one point scored an 8-0 run, powered by a
Lola Plamenco three and capped with a McEwan lay-in.
CSI was led by another strong performance by Todaro, who powered for 21 points and a career-high 23 rebounds, which tied her for the 14th-highest single game total in CSI history. The feat was made more impressive by the fact that Todaro banked just 25 minutes in the game. McEwan was next in line with 19 points, adding five assists, while Foster finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. CCNY saw Reilly Boehm finish with a game high 30 points, with Fumasoli adding 12. Melanie Torres was CCNY's only other scorer with four points, and she added 10 rebounds. CSI out-rebounded CCNY, 59-36, and CSI forced 22 CCNY turnovers to their nine.
Riding their longest win streak of the season, CSI will be looking to keep it alive on Saturday, when they host Medgar Evers College at The Tank at 3 PM.
