New York, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team picked up their second consecutive win against John Jay College today defeating the Bloodhounds by a score of 71-58. The Dolphins victory improved them to 4-7 on the season and dropped John Jay below the .500 mark to 5-6.
The Dolphins came storming out of the gate in the early going scoring the game's first nine points while holding the Bloodhounds scoreless for over six minutes to open the first quarter. John Jay finally got on the board for the first time with 3:44 to play in the opening quarter, but the Dolphins rattled off another six straight to go ahead 15-2. Despite the poor start, the Bloodhounds did manage to recover and pull to within 19-9 with a 7-4 run to close to the frame.
The two teams exchanged baskets throughout the first few minutes of the second quarter with the Bloodhounds getting as close as six at the 6:26 mark. However, CSI would get in front by double-digits once again on a
Denise Priolo layup which at the time gave her a team-leading 8 points. The Dolphins would go in front by as many as 13 in the quarter, leading 35-22 with just over two minutes to play in the half, but the Bloodhounds would ultimately cut the lead down to nine with another strong finish to a quarter, this time a 6-2 run.
CSI got big contributions across the board in the first half as four different players scored at least six points for CSI prior to the intermission. Diedre Foster led the way with 10 with
Denise Priolo adding 8 more. Both
Diana Todaro and
Kayla Schmitter scored 6, and as a team the Dolphins possessed a commanding 27-18 lead on the boards. John Jay got 10 points for Nyasha Howard and 9 from All'aha Albright with no other Bloodhound scoring more than 3.
Still leading by nine less than a minute into the second half, the Dolphins went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding sixteen point lead, but the Bloodhounds continued to battle back. Behind by fifteen, 48-33, John Jay went on a 6-0 run to get back within nine behind continued strong efforts from Howard and Albright. However, Foster continued to give John Jay fits in the final minutes of the third helping to put CSI back ahead by fourteen to wrap up the quarter.
The Dolphins would lead by at least twelve points the rest of the way and opened the new year with a thirteen point, 71-58, victory over John Jay. Foster scored a team-high 18 points to go along with 6 rebounds. Todaro was second in scoring with 14, and made it double-double with 15 rebounds. Priolo had 11 points and 6 rebounds with
Brianna Robisky rounding out the group of Dolphins in double-figures with 10. Albright and Howard had 19 and 15 respectively for the Bloodhounds and Katie Healy finished the game with a 10 point, 10 rebound double-double.
The Dolphins are right back in action on Monday at 5:30 when they visit York College for the second of three straight road games against CUNYAC opponents.
