DOLPHINS SHUTOUT ECC FOE SPARTANS, 1-0, IN THRILLING CONFERENCE MATCHUP

Sparkill, NY – As part of a double header of ECC action, the first game was The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team who picked up a huge win this afternoon, 1-0, on the road against St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC). The win improves the Dolphins record to, 3-10-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the ECC, giving them an outside chance at a playoff berth. The Spartans record fell to 4-7 and 2-4 in the ECC.

KEY MOMENTS
The first half for both teams ended in a stalemate, though both teams had chances at putting one in the back of the net. The Dolphins came out in the second half, poised to score controlling the ball in the Spartans box. It was Nadia Evola who gave CSI the, 1-0 lead at the 52nd minute of play. Evola did not start the game but played in the first half and came in early in the second half. Seconds after she entered the game, some fancy footwork by Jenna Como launched a through ball into the Spartans box that bounced off a STAC defender at which point is when, Evola followed the ball and chipped a shot over the Spartans goalkeeper, Colleen Stevens. The Spartans had their best chance at tying the game when Caitlin Speranza fired a shot that hit the crossbar in the 69th minute of play. The Dolphins defensive front played extremely well, despite playing undersized against a much bigger STAC team who had the momentum coming into this one.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins registered five shots (two on-goal) to the Spartans eight shots (three on-goal), in what truly was a back-and-forth affair in the middle of the field in the first half of play. At the end of the game, the Spartans registered 14 shots (six on goal) to the Dolphins six shots (three on goal), the lone shot that CSI took in the second half was the most important one as it gave CSI the, 1-0 lead. The Dolphins defense played exceptionally well, though not seen on the stat sheet, CSI used their quickness and spread themselves enough to keep STAC players from using their physicality for most of the game.

DOLPHIN OF THE GAME
Today's Dolphin of the game goes to Nadia Evola, who scored the only goal of the game and her third of the season. However, without the help of the Dolphin defenders and Goalkeeper Sara Villacres, who saved all six shots-on-goal by STAC, the game could have turned out much different. CSI truly held their own against a formidable Spartan team who had won two of their last three games.

COACH'S REACTION
First year head coach, Brendan Guzman was pleased with his team's performance today, he added, "Going on the road, we stuck to the task, and we stuck to the scout. We felt prepared and planned well, the women worked hard all week and that is what will give (us) the desired result. They are figuring out the details (of DII play), and we are competing for a full 90 minutes. I am extremely proud of their performance today."
