Staten Island, NY – On a sunny fall afternoon in October at Dolphin Soccer Park, The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team fell to East Stroudsburg University (ESU), 1-0. CSI players sported their pink socks as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness festivities during the game. The loss drops the Dolphins record to 3-11-1 overall, while the Warriors record improves to 7-6-1 overall. This was the first-ever meeting between both squads and the second to last non-conference game left for CSI.
KEY MOMENTS
In the first half for the Dolphins, they endured a few shot attempts by the Warriors at the beginning and tail end of the first half. Seven total shots were taken by ESU in the first, though, only two were on goal. CSI registered two shots, both on goal but saved easily by ESU's goalie. The second half is where Sara Villacres made a huge save off a free kick attempt by ESU player Rebecca Kotula, just outside the box that kept the game scoreless with 30 minutes remaining in the game. It wasn't until the seventy-seventh minute mark of the game when ESU's Alessa Bianchini sent a corner kick deep in the Dolphins goal zone, that bounced off a CSI Dolphin defender, making it 1-0 ESU via an own goal score by CSI. The Dolphins would stop the Warriors from making it a two-goal game much of the rest of the game, thus, were not able to create a chance at tying the game before a final of, 1-0 ESU.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins were outshot 11-6, though, they were tied in shots-on-goal at five apiece. The Warriors tallied eight corners in the game, one of which was the result of the own goal by CSI. CSI only mustered one corner kick. CSI's defense played well despite the own goal, especially Dolphin goalkeeper, Villacres who played the entire game. She faced 11 shots in all and saved all five shots on goal by the Warriors.
DOLPHIN OF THE GAME
Today's Dolphin of the game, despite the loss, goes to CSI Goalkeeper, freshman Sara Villacres who dating back to the last game, has saved 11 of the last 11 shots on goal that she has faced. Nadia Evola led the Dolphins in shots with two, both on goal.
