Staten Island, NY - Taking on Queens College for the second time in program history, the College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team lost today's meeting with the Knights by a final score of 4-2. The CSI loss, their fifth straight, drops them to 1-7 on the season, 0-2 against the ECC. The Queens victory brings their season mark to 2-2-1 and earns them their first win in ECC play.
KEY MOMENTS
The Knights struck first in the match and never looked back as it was a Victoria Castela goal in the final minutes of the first half that put Queens ahead for good. Already ahead 1-0 entering the second half, the Knights wasted no time adding to their lead with both Sarah Anderson and Sara Messemer finding the back of the net within the first five minutes of half number two. This pair of early second-half goals gave Queens a 3-0 advantage that would stand until the eighty-first minute when Danie Duka scored the first CSI goal off a feed from Sophia Espada. Moments later, Queens would answer with a goal by Julia Ragone, but the Dolphins responded almost as quickly with a Jacquelyn D'Amico penalty kick, the game's final goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The biggest issue for the Dolphins continued to be their lack of scoring opportunities, especially in the first half, and this was once again reflected in the final statistics. The disparity in shots tells most of the story as the Knights outshot the Dolphins 18-3. In addition to the disparity in shots attempted, the Dolphins once again allowed the opposition to put the majority of their shot attempts on target, twelve out of eighteen for Queens. This forced Dolphins goalkeeping to make another eight saves and put the Dolphins in a second-half hole they couldn't climb out of.
DOLPHIN(S) OF THE GAME
Dolphins captain Danie Duka tallied her first goal of the season off of an assist from freshman Sophia Espada late in the second half. This energized both the team as well as the CSI supporters in attendance kick starting a ten-minute stretch at the end of the match which saw the two teams combine for three goals. The last of those three goals also belonged to the Dolphins as Jacquelyn D'Amico converted on a penalty kick to bring her team within two.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dolphins will play the second of three consecutive ECC matches when they take on Lincoln on Wednesday at 1 PM in the opening match of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader.
