Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WOMEN'S SOCCER PICKS UP FIRST WIN AGAINST D'YOUVILLE, 2-0

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team picked up their first win of the season today as they defeated the Saints of D'Youville University by a final score of 2-0.  The Dolphins jumped out to an early lead on an Adriana Melgar goal following a goalkeeping miscue on a bouncing ball by Saints goalkeeper Reaghan Duval.  Already ahead 1-0 in the second half, Macy Jones-Busch intercepted a Saints pass and proceeded to beat Duval top shelf on a breakaway for the insurance goal.  The victory improves the Dolphins to 1-6-1 overall and 1-2 against the East Coast Conference.  The Saints fall to 2-7 with their fourth straight loss, and they are now 1-2 in conference play.

The Dolphins got off to a strong start and applied immediate pressure to the Saints with four shots in the first four minutes of the match.  The Saints quickly responded with four straight shots of their own as the two teams both piled up several early scoring chances.  The Dolphins would be first to break through when a Kolleen Rodriguez shot was initially saved by Duval who then misplayed the rebound.  Melgar, who was trailing the play from the opposite wing, would follow the loose ball and chip it into the Saints goal to give CSI the 1-0 advantage.

Following the intermission, the first three shots were attempted by the Saints, but from that point forward the Dolphins took control.  CSI's first attempt of the half came shortly after the third D'Youville shot attempt and immediately following an intercepted pass by Jones-Busch.  She took it straight into the penalty area and was left one on one with Duval.  On the breakaway, she beat the Saints keeper for the second Dolphins goal and gave the Dolphins a two-goal lead that they would never relinquish.  The Saints attempted just one shot during the final thirty-five minutes of the match and the Dolphins cruised to a two-goal victory.

For the Dolphins, the two-goal effort was their best scoring output of the season.  Also, two more Dolphins registered their first goals of the season as both Melgar and Jones-Busch found the back of the net for the first time.  Eleonora Cecchini led the Saints with four shots, three of those on goal, and the Dolphins did a good job shutting out the Saints leading scorer.  In goal, Sara Villacres posted the shutout to help the Dolphins to their first victory of the season.

CSI returns to action in one week when they face another conference opponent in Roberts Wesleyan University.  That match will kick off next Saturday at 1:00.
