WOMEN'S SOCCER EXCHANGES GOALS IN 1-1 DRAW AGAINST GEORGIAN COURT

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team returned to their home pitch this afternoon and battled Georgian Court University to a 1-1 draw.  Neither team scored in the first half, but both teams would score within seconds of each other in the second half.  First, a Dolphins free kick led to a Jacquelyn D'Amico header for the first CSI goal.  Shortly after, the Lions got even on an Aliya Canfield goal, her team-leading fifth of the season.  Both teams were kept off of the scoreboard the rest of the way and the match ended in a draw, 1-1.

The Lions had a distinct advantage in time of possession and time on attack through the first forty-five minutes attempting seven shots, three of which were on goal.  The Lions also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks during the first half but could not convert on any of their numerous scoring chances. The Dolphins attempted just two shots ahead of the intermission, but the score remained tied heading into the break.

Following halftime, the Dolphins attempted just a single shot the rest of the way.  However, it was the biggest shot of the game to that point as D'Amico found the back of the net on a header following a Nadia Evola free kick.  Just minutes later, the Lions would get even on an Abby Kenelly cross that bounced around in traffic and onto the foot of Aliya Canfield.  Canfield chipped the ball over Dolphins goalkeeper Brianna Dore and off of the far post for the equalizer to even the score at 1-1.  This would be the first of many opportunities for the Lions the rest of the way, but the Dolphins defense and goalkeeping held up through the next thirty-five minutes.  In the closing seconds, CSI would have one final opportunity for a potential game-winning shot attempt, but an offsides call would send the game to its conclusion in a draw.

For D'Amico, her goal was her first of the season for CSI and Evola's assists was also her first.  Today's start was also the first of the season for Evola who recently returned to the Dolphins lineup and the second of the season in goal for Dore.  Dore performed well in goal with four saves against five shots in her seventh outing of the season and received plenty of late support from her defense as well.  Canfield took over sole possession of the team lead in goals for the Lions with her fifth of the season and Kennelly tallied her team-leading fourth.

The Dolphins will next be in action this weekend when they travel to Lincoln, Pennsylvania for a conference matchup with the Lions on Saturday.
