GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL TAKES ON ST. MICHAEL'S COLLEGE IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY

11/22/2022 8:00:00 AM

Colchester, VT - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team returns to action today following six days off as they take on the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College in Vermont.  The Dolphins enter today's game still in search of their first win in the midst of an 0-3 start to the year.  The Purple Knights have won each of their first four games of the season and are off to an 4-0 start.  Today's game will be the first time these two teams have met.

The Dolphins were last in action on Wednesday of last week when they took on the Tigers of Holy Family University.  After falling behind early, the Dolphins erased a first-half deficit and took the lead around the midway point of the opening period.  However, the Tigers pulled away in the second half as the Dolphins struggled shooting and dropped their third straight game.  The Purple Knights have won by single digits in each of their four games, the most recent being an eight-point victory over the College of St. Rose.  That game was played just three days ago on Saturday and was the second of two wins for St. Michael's in NE10 Conference play this season.

Three Dolphins are averaging at least 14 points per game through the first three contest of the year led by Luis Armas and his 16.3 points per game.  Bryce Waterman is not far behind averaging an even one point below that and Messiah Mallory comes in averaging 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.  In addition to scoring in double-figures, all three are shooting at least 40% from the field with both Armas and Waterman shooting over 40% from three-point range as well.  The biggest struggle for CSI through their first three games has been protecting leads.  This issue has in part been caused by the team allowing opponents to shot nearly 46% from the field while outrebounding them by an average of 10 boards per game.

The Purple Knights are led in scoring by CJ Crews who is shooting over 46% from both the field and beyond the arc.  Alan Brzezinski is scoring 14.3 in under 20 minutes per game while shooting an even more efficient 57% from the field and 50% from downtown.  However, the Purple Knights are shooting below 40% from the floor as a team this year.  On the defensive side of the ball, they have held opponents to 42% shooting overall and just 27% three-point shooting.
