MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES TIGHT GAME AGAINST PACE UNIVERSITY, 60-56

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team battled Pave University into the final seconds earlier today, but the Dolphins could not secure their second straight win as they fell 60-56.  For the Dolphins, the loss drops them to 1-4 on the season.  The Setters avenge last year's loss to CSI at The Tank with the win and improve to 5-1 on the year.

The Dolphins got off to a strong start in the game scoring seven of the first nine points in the game.  From there the Setters immediately went on a 8-0 run to take a three-point lead.  The Dolphins would go on to lead by as many as six before halftime behind 12 first-half points from Chris Velasquez, but the two teams entered the break knotted up at 32.  Only eight points were scored between the two teams through the first five minutes of the second half, but Messiah Mallory began to heat up for the Dolphins.  Mallory was responsible for seven of the first nine CSI points in the second half and once again the Dolphins lead grew as large as six for the second time.

The two teams remained locked in a defensive battle until the final minutes and were tied at 49 with 3:55 left in the game.  Five straight points by the Setters gave them their largest lead, but a huge three by Velasquez brought the Dolphins within one with just over one minute to play.  A Velasquez jumper then made it a one point game again with 32 seconds on the clock, but following a missed free throw on the front end of a one-and-one for Pace, the Dolphins turned the ball over on their next offensive possession.  After two free throws by Brandon Powell made it a three-point game, Luis Armas missed a three-pointer for the tie and the Dolphins ultimately fell by four.

Velasquez was huge for the Dolphins for the second consecutive game as he followed up his game-winner on Tuesday with a 21-point effort in today's game.  He shot 9-12 from the floor and 3-6 from beyond the arc as well.  Mallory added 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Dolphins.  For CSI, three players played the full 40 minutes in the absence of Bryce Waterman.  Velasquez, Armas and JJ Chestnut never left the floor for CSI and the Dolphins played nearly the entire game with a rotation of just six players.  The Setters were led in scoring by Powell who had 23 points on 7-9 from the field including 5-5 from three-point range.  Marc Dadika had 19 points on 7-11 for Pace and no other player scored more than 4 points for the Setters.

The Dolphins will return home after over two weeks away when they take on the Mercy College Mavericks in the back half of Wednesday's East Coast Conference doubleheader at The Tank.
