GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL CONTINUES NON-CONFERENCE PLAY AGAINST GEORGIAN COURT

12/17/2022 6:00:00 AM

Lakewood, NJ - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team will continue their run of non-conference games this afternoon when they take on the Lions of Georgian Court University at noon.  The Dolphins come in 3-7 on the season and have won two of their last three games.  The Lions enter today's matchup with wins in three of their last four games and are 5-4 on the season.  Today's meeting will be the first time the two teams have faced one another.

The Dolphins last played on Wednesday night when they took on Alliance University at home.  After a fast start to the game for CSI, Alliance seized control midway through the opening quarter and went on to lead by as many as 28 points.  The Dolphins cut the lead to as little as 10 with just under seven minutes to play, but they wouldn't get any closer than that in a seventeen-point defeat.  Georgian Court last played one week ago and came from behind to defeat Delaware State University behind a strong second half and five double-digit scoring efforts.

CSI's leading scorer Messiah Mallory battled foul trouble in limited minutes on Wednesday against Alliance, but he still leads active Dolphins in scoring at 15.5 points per game and in rebounding at 8.9 boards per game.  JJ Chestnut continued his stellar play following last week's East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honor and scored 15 against the Warriors to go along with 5 rebounds and 9 assists.  Luis Armas continues to shoot well from beyond the arc and is currently at 36% for the season while scoring just shy of 14 points per game.  Chris Velasquez is coming off a season-high 22 points on Wednesday and has his scoring average up to nearly 11 points per game.  Clint Wright Jr. is the leading scorer for the Lions at 16.9 points per game and is shooting 47% from the field and 44% from three-point range.  Right behind him in scoring is Jamaal Waters with 15.6 points per game and a team-leading 8.9 rebounds per game.  Waters is shooting an even more efficient 56% from the field this year with the lone blemish on stat line being his 54% mark from the line.
