Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island faced off against the Saints in a double-header today at the Cal Ripken Experience. After dropping their first game 10-1, they responded with a victory in the second contest, 7-5. This defeat on Limestone University not only puts them in the win column for the first time this year, but also means something for Dolphins head coach,
Michael Mauro. This win ties him with long time CSI head coach Bill Cali (1995-08) for most wins in Dolphins history (268). Mauro has been at the helm since 2009 when he took over for Cali. Today's split puts CSI at 1-3 on the season, as the opposing Saints improve to 3-14 overall.
KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
Limestone got on the board early as they converted on a homer in the top of the first. CSI would scratch for the first and only time in the bottom of the third. This was sparked by a Myers single to shortstop. Gardner would ground out to first as Myers advanced to second. Ulaj then singled up the middle and Myers scored. This tied the game at one. For the rest of the contest Staten Island would register single hits in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. After tallying two runs in the fifth, the Saints did most of their damage in the sixth. They scored five total runs and hits in the inning. This put them up 8-1 as they closed out the Dolphins in the seventh and final inning, 10-1.
Game 2
The Saints would get off to a good start again by putting two quick runs on the board, but the Dolphins would make noise in the bottom of the first. A
Michael Crocco single to center field followed by a
John Castiglione walk would set up a Santiago single to third where Crocco would score, 2-1. Castiglione would score on a wild pitch and a
Nick Cippoletti single to center led to scores from both
Angel Santiago and
Thomas Marten, 4-2. The Dolphins would keep it rolling in the second as Crocco singled to right field leading to a score for himself, 5-2. At the top of the third, Limestone would tack on two runs of their own to bring them within one run, 5-4. CSI responded again as they would put together a three hit-one run inning thanks to a
Bryan Birkhead single to right field which advanced
Michael Kehoe in for the run, 6-4. The Saints would throw in a solo at the top of the fourth and a Castiglione single up the middle would start a solo-run sequence for the Dolphins. CSI closed out Limestone 7-5.
