Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island faced off against the Saints in their final doubleheader today at the Cal Ripken Experience. They topped Limestone University in back-to-back games. They won game one 12-7 and took game two 9-7. This sweep on Limestone University not only gives the Dolphins a three-game win-streak, but also means something for Dolphins head coach,
Michael Mauro. These wins make him the winningest coach in Dolphins baseball history (270) passing long time CSI head coach Bill Cali (268). Today's consecutive victories put CSI at 3-3 on the season, as the opposing Saints fall to 3-16 overall.
KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
Limestone got on the board early as they converted on three runs in the top of the first inning. CSI would answer in a big way. Behind two walks, a
Thomas Marten single to center field and a
John Castiglione HBP, the Dolphins would get on the board, 3-1. This was followed by a David Castiglione score off of a wild pitch and a
Nick Cippoletti single that would send Marten in for a run, 3-3. They ended the inning as they ripped off two quick ones behind a stolen base and a Birkhead double to left field, 5-3. Limestone would tack on a run at the top of third and both squads would score two runs each, 7-6. The Saints would knot things up 7 apiece in the top of the fifth, but the Dolphins went on another rampage in the bottom of the fifth. Sparked by two singles in to left field by
Michael Kehoe and
Jake Myers,
Bryan Birkhead would score, 8-7. That was followed by a Kehoe score and a Castiglione triple to left center which helped CSI build a 5-run advantage. They would maintain that lead go on to win 12-7
Game 2
The Saints would get off to a good start again by putting three quick runs on the board, but the Dolphins would tack two on in bottom of the first. This was started by a Gardner single to right field. That was followed by a Castiglione single, and a
Steven Collica single up the middle which would lead to an RBI. Castiglione would score off this sequence. The Dolphins trailed 3-2. After Limestone didn't scratch in the top of the second, CSI did most of their damage in the bottom half. Sparked by a
Nick Campisi and Myers walk, a Gardner single to right field led to a score by Campisi to knot the game at 3. Collica singled down the right field line which led to two RBI's scored by Castiglione and Gardner. To close the inning,
Shendi Ulaj would single up the middle and Marten would score, 7-3. The Saints would cut into the lead with three runs in the third and CSI would tack one on in fourth. A Birkhead double in the bottom of the sixth would set up a Castiglione run. The Dolphins won 9-7.
