Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island faced off against the Spartans today in the first of a three-game set against them. The Dolphins dropped a tough one in the final inning of play, 12-10. Today's matchup puts CSI at 6-9 (0-1 ECC) on the season, as the opposing STAC improved to 7-12 (1-0 ECC) overall.
KEY MOMENTS
The Dolphins got off to a strong start in the bottom of the first. They jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. It was sparked by a Castiglione double to left center. After walks from Marten and Ulaj, a Gardner double to right center would lead to two RBIs as Marten and Castiglione scored. Gardner would advance to third on a wild pitch and Ulaj would score. The Spartans would take no time to respond as they would knot the contest at three runs apiece in the top of the second inning. CSI would regain their lead and take a one-run advantage after a Castiglione reach on a fielder's choice led to a Birkhead score. After three quiet innings from both squads, STAC would scratch in the top of the sixth to tie the game 4-4. In the bottom of the seventh the Dolphins would put four runs on the board. Doubles from Ulaj, Gardner, and Collica would lead to two RBIs as Ulaj and Gardner scored. This all set up for a Cippoletti homer down the left field line as CSI took a commanding 8-4 lead. The Spartans responded with a run in the top of the eight before the Dolphins landed two runs in the bottom to extend their gap to five, 10-5. Unfortunately for CSI, STAC would turn five hits into seven runs in the top of the ninth and take a two-run advantage that would never be answered. The Spartans would steal this one 12-10.
