GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL BATTLES ROBERTS WESLEYAN IN PIVOTAL CONFERENCE MATCHUP

1/21/2023 10:00:00 AM

Rochester, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team returns to East Coast Conference competition this afternoon as they face the Roberts Wesleyan University Redhawks on the road at 4 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game 5-12 on the season and are 3-4 in conference play.  The Redhawks come into today's game with a 6-10 overall record and are 4-4 against the ECC.  These two teams have faced off twice including a thriller at The Tank last season.  Each team took the win on their home floor in the two games played last year.

The Dolphins last outing came on Tuesday night against Franklin Pierce University in non-conference play.  Trailing by 18 at one point in the second half, the Dolphins battled back to ask close as six in a 77-69 loss to the Ravens.  The Redhawks were last in action on Monday against the University of the District of Columbia and dropped a close game 79-75.

Bryce Waterman is coming off of a big effort for the Dolphins on Tuesday when he scored 20 points on 6-14 shooting from beyond the arc.  He is currently CSI's second-leading scorer behind only Messiah Mallory who is also the team's leading rebounder.  Mallory was key in the last Dolphins victory against Molloy one week ago, and has remains a dominant presence at both ends of the floor.  Jordan McAllister has provided the Dolphins consistently efficient scoring since joining the team and is averaging over 14 points per game on nearly 60% shooting.  As the Dolphins rotation has shortened during their recent games, JJ Chestnut, Luis Armas, and Chris Velasquez round out a group of six Dolphins who have been playing the bulk of the minutes in the team's recent games.  The Redhawks are led in scoring by a trio of players averaging double-figures, Ja'Kair Sanchez, Malik Brooks, and Abou Gbane.  Sanchez is also the team's second-leading rebounder at 6.4 boards per game trailing only Nicholas Johnson who is averaging 6.6.

The Dolphins come in shooting the ball very well this season as a team and the Redhawks have allowed opponents to shoot over 45% on the season.  As a unit, the Redhawks are shooting a respectable 42% from the field, but they are only shooting 30% from beyond the arc.  Last year's game at The Tank came down to the final shot for Roberts Wesleyan as a potential game-tying three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.  The Redhawks won by double-digits in the second meeting last year and the winner of tonight's game will take a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.
