MEN'S BASKETBALL BOUNCES BACK WITH HUGE COME-FROM-BEHIND CONFERENCE WIN OVER MERCY

Dobbs Ferry, NY -  The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team turned a 15-point first-half deficit into a 15-point win earlier tonight as they defeated the Mercy College Mavericks 85-70.  The Dolphins improve to 6-13 with what is a huge conference win and are now 4-5 against the ECC.  The Mavericks fall to 2-15 on the season with the loss and are now 1-8 in conference play.

The Dolphins quickly jumped out to a five-point lead behind five early points from Chris Velasquez, but the Mavericks promptly responded with a 9-0 run to go ahead by four.  The Dolphins would then go back in front 22-20, but this is the last time that CSI would lead in the first half.  The Mavericks would go on to score 27 of the next 37 points to take a game-high 15-point lead.  Back-to-back baskets by Bryan Gomez and JJ Chestnut to end the first half cut the lead back down to ten, but the Dolphins once again found themselves trailing by double-digits going into the second half.

The Dolphins wasted no time pulling to with three following the intermission and trailed 49-46 with just under seventeen minutes to play.  Messiah Mallory led the CSI resurgence with 10 points in the first seven minutes of the second half on his way to a 25-point effort.  Though the Dolphins were within one possession for much of the second half, they did not take the lead back until there were under seven minutes remaining in the game.  It was Bryce Waterman who delivered the go-ahead three at the 6:53 mark, and the Dolphins would never trail again after that.  Stifling CSI defense held Mercy to just 26% shooting in the second half as the Dolphins completed a 30-point swing.  Once trailing by as many as fifteen, CSI ultimately took the win by fifteen, 85-70.

Mallory delivered another double-double for the Dolphins finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds.  Chestnut also had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and added five assists as well.  Velasquez also scored in double-figures with 10 and Jordan McAllister scored twelve or more points for the sixth time in seven games as a Dolphin finishing with 15.  As a unit, the Dolphins shot over 40% from the field and 37% from beyond the arc, but it was their defense in the second half that spurred yet another comeback.  The Mavericks were led in scoring by Sean Smith Jr. who finished with 22 points on 7-16 shooting.  Brandon Wilson had 11 on 5-12 from the field for Mercy, and he combined with Smith Jr. to account for for 28 of the 70 Mavericks shot attempts.  After 51% shooting in the first half, the Mercy offense struggled for much of the final 20 minutes as they were denied a season series sweep of the Dolphins with the CSI victory.

The Dolphins will have the opportunity to pick up a win over an unbeaten conference opponent on Saturday when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at The Tank.  On the heels of the Matty and Delores White Alumni Game, the Dolphins will take on the Spartans at 1 PM.
