GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL HOSTS ST. THOMAS AQUINAS ON ALUMNI DAY

1/28/2023 7:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team returns from a two week road trip today as they host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at 1 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game 6-13 on the season and are 4-5 against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans enter today's game 18-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 against the ECC.  The Spartans have won all four meetings between the two teams since the start of the 2019-2020 season with CSI's lone win coming in the 1978-1979 season.

The Dolphins were last in action on Wednesday night against Mercy College and put together yet another impressive second-half comeback bid.  After trailing by as many as 15 in the first half, the Dolphins ultimately won the game by 15 points to pick up a critical conference win over the Mavericks.  The Spartans last played on Wednesday as well and scored 100 points for the fourth time this season in a win over the University of the District of Columbia.

Messiah Mallory was key in Wednesday's Dolphins win as he registered a 25-point, 13-rebound double-double to help lead CSI to a come-from-behind victory.  Mallory remains CSI's leading scorer and rebounder and continues to make a case for East Coast Conference Player of the Year.  Jordan McAllister has made an immediate impact since joining the Dolphins and is the team's second-leading scorer barely edging out Bryce WatermanLuis Armas and JJ Chestnut join Mallory, McAllister and Waterman in averaging double-figures.  Along with Chris Velasquez, those six Dolphins have played the bulk of the minutes for CSI as the team has recently shortened the rotation.

Freshman James Patterson has been a massive addition for the Spartans this season, and like Mallory, he is his team's leading scorer and rebounder.  DeVante Jamison, the team's second-leading scorer, is the team-leader in assists per game, and along with Patterson, is the second of four Spartans scoring at least 11.5 points per game.  The Dolphins have had the advantage in shooting entering most of their games this year, but the Spartans come in with a 44% mark from the field and shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc.  However, both teams shot very poorly last time they faced off in early December of last year, a game in which the Spartans scored a season-low 62 points.

Ahead of today's game, Men's Basketball will host the annual Matty and Delores White Alumni Game.  The game will be streamed on CSI Sportsnet via the ECC Network and is scheduled to go on the air at approximately 11 AM.
