SWIMMING & DIVING WRAPS UP RECORD-BREAKING WEEKEND AT CSI INVITE

11/18/2023 8:00:00 PM

Staten Island, NY - A busy weekend at the Sports & Recreation Center came to an end earlier tonight as Swimming & Diving wrapped up the second annual CSI Invite.  The meet, which featured five teams, the College of St. Rose, Mount Saint Mary College, Sarah Lawrence College, Roberts Wesleyan University, and the College of Staten Island, began last night and concluded over 24 hours later.  On the men's side, the Dolphins picked up the win over their East Coast Conference rival.  In the women's meet, the Redhawks narrowly defeated the Dolphins head-to-head.  Following the conclusion of the night's final event, both ECC programs were a part of a post-meet ceremony organized with the help of the East Coast Conference.  The winning teams as well as individual student-athletes were presented with awards as the ECC continues their show of support for the two Swimming & Diving programs in the conference.  The College of Saint Rose was the overall winner in the meet as they placed first on both the men's and women's side.

Session 1 (Friday, 5:30 PM)
The meet opened with the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, both of which were won by the College of St. Rose.  The Golden Knights barely edged out the Redhawks in the women's relay before overtaking the CSI men by about three seconds in the men's relay.  Edna Melendez scored the first CSI win of the night in the 500-Yard Freestlye shortly and Nicholas Tartaglione took second in the same event for the men.  Aurelia Barbagallo added another first place finish for the CSI women in the 200-Yard IM and William Kwan took second for the CSI men.  Jessica Johnson and Katherine Ebrahim took one and two in the 50-Yard Freestyle and Johnson broke her own program record in the process with a time of 24.80.  In the same event, Anthony Attenborough took second for the men with a time of 21.34.  The final event of the night saw the CSI women take first and set a new program record in the 400-Yard Medley Relay.  The men would take second in the same event to bring the meet's first session to a close.

Session 2 (Saturday, 9:30 AM)
The Dolphins opened the morning with another win and another new program record in the 200-Yard Medley Relay.  The CSI women registered a time of 1:53.63 before the men took second and came just one second short of a program record soon after.  The next event saw three CSI men compete in the 400 IM taking second, third, and fourth.  Barbagallo then took second in the 100-Yard Butterfly to set yet another CSI program record with a time of 1:02.66.  Tartaglione and Charles Cusumano took second and third in the same event for the men before Attenborough and Eliot Radov took two and three in the 200-Yard Freestyle.  For the CSI women, Jessica Johnson took second in the 100-Yard Breaststroke and Melendez shattered her own program record with a first place finish in the 100-Yard Backstroke. Maxim Kleyer and David Poggioli took first and second in the 100-Yard Backstroke for the men before a short break ahead of the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay.  In the final event of the morning, the CSI women set a new program record and took second while the men finished the final event of the session in first.

Diving Session (Saturday, 1:30 PM)
1-Meter Diving saw a very close finish in the women's event as Sidney Simmons of Roberts Wesleyan barely surpassed Jordan Swanson of the Dolphins.  Women's 3-Meter Diving was even closer as Emma Dicob took first over Swanson by less than four points.  On the men's side, it was a dominant outing for the Redhawks who took the top three spots in 1-Meter and the top two spots in the 3-Meter event.

Session 4 (Saturday, 5:00 PM)
After the meet's final session opened with the 1000 Free, the Dolphins scored their first win when Melendez took first in the 200-Yard Backstroke, once again shattering her own record in the process.  Julian Lopez and Kleyer took third and fourth in the same event for the CSI men.  Johnson then took second in the 100 Free that followed while Attenborough and Poggioli took third and fourth for the men.  William Kwan missed first place by a fraction of a second in the 200-Yard Breaststroke before Tartaglione and Charles Cusumano took the top two spots in the 200-Yard Butterfly.  This set the stage for the final event of the night which saw the Redhawks win an incredibly close 400 Yard Freestyle Relay on the women's side.  In the men's relay, Saint Rose took the win by nearly ten seconds as they would go on to be the overall winner in both the men's and women's meet.

Next up for the Dolphins will be a pair of NE-10 meets.  First, the Dolphins will face Southern Connecticut State University on December 2nd.  Two weeks later, they will visit Pace University on December 16th.
