Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team battled back from a tough third quarter against St. Thomas Aquinas earlier today, but their fourth quarter comeback fell just short as they lost to the Spartans 61-56.  The Dolphins are now 5-4 on the season and drop to 2-2 in conference play.  The Spartans improve to 4-5 overall and are now 2-1 against the ECC.

The Dolphins started very strong in the first and opened the game by scoring the first nine points.  Dana Phelan scored 5 of her 25 points during the 9-0 run and the Dolphins went ahead by double-figures for the first time with just under four minutes remaining in the first.  STAC would begin to find their shooting stroke late in the period and worked their way back to within five entering the second.  STAC would open the second with six straight points to take their first lead, 19-18, but they would not stay in front for long.  An 8-0 Dolphins run put CSI ahead by seven and they would grow that lead to nine going into halftime.

After CSI built their lead in the latter half of the second quarter, the Spartans built a lead of their own even more quickly in the third.  A 10-0 STAC run opened the third and put them ahead by one for the second time in the game.  However, the Dolphins surged back in front behind a 5-0 run of their own.  From there, the Dolphins would only score three more points in the quarter, and the Spartans entered the fourth leading by nine.  The fourth quarter began with a Phelan three, a Kyra Rose layup, and a second Phelan three to pull the Dolphins to within one.  After five back-and-forth minutes, the Dolphins finally tied the score with just over three minutes remaining.  After falling behind 59-54, CSI would score just two points the rest of the way as the Spartans defense secured the 61-56 victory.

Phelan scored a career high 25 points behind 7-10 shooting from three-point range to lead the Dolphins in scoring.  Rose and Jenalyse Alarcon each had 9 with Alarcon adding 8 rebounds and 4 assists.  Erin Leary and Sarah Ericson led the Spartans in scoring with 19 points each and Leary registered a double-double with her 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The Dolphins are next in action on Tuesday at Adelphi before returning home next Saturday to face Caldwell University at The Tank.
