GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL FACES THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY

2/15/2023 10:00:00 AM

West Haven, CT - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team returns to non-conference play tonight as they hit the road for a matchup with the University of New Haven at 7:30 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game with a 8-16 record on the season the Chargers come in with a record of 15-8.  These two teams have faced each other just once before and it was a big win for the Chargers over the Dolphins in the 2021 Tournament of Heroes hosted at The Tank.

The Dolphins last played on Saturday against Molloy University looking to move one step closer to locking up a spot in the East Coast Conference playoffs.  After a back-and-forth first half, the game got away from the Dolphins late in the second half of a twenty-point loss.  New Haven also suffered a loss in their last game as they fell to Assumption by a single point, 65-64.  The loss for the Chargers was their first in their last three games.

In the loss to the Chargers last season, Messiah Mallory, Chris Velasquez and Bryce Waterman all scored in double-figures for the Dolphins.  That trio has accounted for much of the CSI offense in recent games as well with both Waterman and Velasquez achieving season-highs in points during CSI's last three games.  Mallory comes in averaging one rebound shy of a double-double on the season as well with 15.9 points and 9 boards per game.  Devontrey Thomas had a huge game against the Dolphins last season scoring 31 points, and this year he is New Haven's third-leading scorer at 12.4 points per game.  Both Ty Perry and Quashawn Lane are averaging at least 15 points per game to lead the Chargers, and Majur Majak is leading the team in rebounding with 11.3 per game.  The Chargers are a team that shoots an efficient 45% from the field, but they come in shooting just 31% from beyond the arc.  The Dolphins haven been more efficient from downtown just shy of 35%, but they are shooting 42% from the field.
