GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL HOSTS ROBERTS WESLEYAN ON SENIOR DAY WITH PLAYOFF SPOT IN HAND

2/25/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team will host Senior Day at The Tank today when they take on the Roberts Wesleyan University Red Hawks at 3 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game 8-18 on the season and have locked up a playoff spot in the East Coast Conference with a 6-9 conference record.  The 9-14 Red Hawks are 7-8 against the conference and can still be leapfrogged in the standings by the Dolphins.

The Dolphins enter today's game as the six seed in the ECC.  However, a win would move them up to five and set up a meeting with UDC.  That matchup also could change depending on the result of the game between Molloy and St. Thomas Aquinas which tips off one hour before the Dolphins face the Red Hawks.  If Molloy wins, they will secure the three seed in the conference, but if they lose, UDC will pass them and the Lions would drop to four.

The Dolphins last played one week ago against UDC and could not complete a comeback bid in the second half of a 10-point loss.  In their last game on Thursday, the Red Hawks suffered a lopsided defeat against the University of the District of Columbia.  With this loss, the door remains open for the Dolphins to surpass them in the conference playoff standings entering the final game of the season.

Ahead of today's tip-off, the Dolphins will honor seniors Justin Cardenas, Bryan Gomez, and Chris Velasquez.  Each has been a part of the Men's Basketball program for at least four years and they will all be playing in their final home game this afternoon.  Cardenas and Gomez have spent the season coming off the CSI bench while Velasquez is in the midst of the best run of his career.  Velasquez comes in having scored at least 15 in his last four games and set a pair of new career-highs in scoring during that stretch.  Messiah Mallory is one rebound shy of averaging a double-double on the season with 15.9 points and 9 boards per game.  Along with Mallory and Velasquez, Bryce Waterman, Jordan McAllister and Luis Armas are all scoring in double-figures on the season for a Dolphins team that is shooting 42% as a unit.  On the other side, the Red Hawks have four players scoring in double-digits, but it was Nicholas Johnson who led the team in scoring against the Dolphins earlier this season with 25 points.  Ja'Kair Sanchez and Malik Brooks, the team's two leading scorers, are shooting 46% and 55% respectively.  Both teams come in shooting the ball well, and the two sides combined for 168 points when they met earlier this season.

All-Time Series - RWU leads, 2-1
