Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN'S BASKETBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH SENIOR DAY VICTORY, 73-64

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team wrapped up the regular season with a victory on Senior Day as they knocked off Roberts Wesleyan University, 73-64.  The Dolphins finish the regular season with a 9-18 overall record and a 7-9 mark against the East Coast Conference.  With the loss, the Redhawks fall beneath the Dolphins in the standings finishing the year 9-15 overall and a 7-9 in conference play.

Both teams got off to an incredibly slow start offensively and were tied at six over eight minutes into the first half.  From here, the pace of play began to pick up and the two teams found their shooting stroke.  Luis Armas connected on consecutive threes for the Dolphins and Malik Brooks began to shoulder the load offensively for the Redhawks as the two teams combined to score 56 points in the final twelve minutes of the half.  Also getting hot for the Dolphins was Bryce Waterman who connected on three straight threes to end the period.  The last of those shots came from well beyond the arc at the buzzer and gave the Dolphins a four-point lead heading into halftime.

The Dolphins got the better of play early in the second half and quickly extended their lead up to twelve with just inside of fifteen minutes remaining in the game.  From there, the Redhawks went on an 8-0 run to pull back to within four, but the Dolphins answered with another three from Waterman.  An Armas triple extended the CSI lead to eight moments later, and five straight points by Chris Velasquez put the Dolphins ahead by thirteen.  The Dolphins would not lead by less than three possessions the rest of the way as they went on to defeat the Redhawks 73-64.

JJ Chestnut, who did not miss a shot, and Armas were tied for the team lead in scoring with 17 for the Dolphins.  Messiah Mallory finished one rebound shy of a double-double and Waterman scored 15.  Four Redhawks scored in double-figures as well led by Rian Carter who had 15.  The difference in the game was the three-point shooting for the two sides as Roberts Wesleyan was never able to get going from beyond the arc.  The Redhawks shot 6-25 from downtown and the Dolphins finished 13-29 from long range.  CSI also shot over 47% from the field in one of their best overall shooting performances of the season.

With the win, the Dolphins pass the Redhawks to take over the fifth seed in the East Coast Conference playoffs.  As a result, they will head back to the University of the District of Columbia for their first round playoff matchup after facing the Firebirds on the road last weekend.
