Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WILDCATS SHOOTING TOO MUCH FOR DOLPHINS IN THIRD STRAIGHT DEFEAT, 79-54

Amherst, NY -  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team could not overcome the red-hot shooting of Deamen University earlier tonight as they fell to the Wildcats by a final score of 79-54.  The Dolphins fall to 7-14 on the season with their third straight loss and they are now 3-8 against the East Coast Conference.  The Wildcats improve to to 13-4 on the year with the win and are now 8-3 against conference opponents.

Both offenses got off to a slow start in the opening quarter as the two sides combined for just 25 points.  However, the Dolphins would lead by three on two separate occasions before a 7-0 Wildcats run put Daemen ahead by four.  Trailing 13-9, Gia Esposito closed the opening period with a three-pointer to bring the Dolphins back to within one after ten minutes.

The Dolphins quickly fell behind by seven in the second, but an Ashley Lambert three cut the Daemen lead down to four.  It was at this point that the Wildcats seized control of the game with lights-out shooting and lockdown defense.  Daemen would score the next eight points over five minutes, and the Dolphins would not register a single made field goal during this stretch.  Another Lambert three snapped the CSI scoring drought with 1:32 remaining in the half, but the Wildcats scored the next five points to take a 36-22 lead into the intermission.

Following halftime, the Wildcats lead would not be reduced to single-digits again.  Just six minutes into the third quarter, the Daemen lead would surpass twenty for the first time, and by the end of the third, the lead had ballooned to 26.  The Dolphins closed the game with their best shooting quarter at nearly 43%, but 43% marked the poorest shooting percentage in any of the four quarters for Daemen.  Behind over 61% shooting in both the second and third quarters, the Wildcats were able to cruise to a 25-point win which earned them a sweep of the season series against the Dolphins.

Esposito, Lambert and Kaia Johnson led the Dolphins in scoring with 11, 10, and 11 points respectively.  The Dolphins did not shoot well early in the game, and by the time they increased their efficiency, the deficit had grown too large.  After shooting sub-27% in each of the first two quarters, CSI shot 38% and 43% in the final two quarters.  Claire Pickett and Kaitlyn Matz each scored 15 for the Wildcats and Mickayla Ivy finished with 14.  The starters for Daemen all played just 21 minutes as the bench saw extensive action once the Wildcats had built their lead past twenty points.  With the victory, Daemen has now won three in a row and remains in the hunt for the top seed entering the East Coast Conference playoffs.

The Dolphins remain in the sixth and final East Coast Conference playoff despite tonight's loss. They currently hold a half-game lead over Roberts Wesleyan in the standing, but the Dolphins also hold the tiebreaker over the Redhawks with the two teams set to meet on the final day of the season.  With three weeks remaining in the season, there remains a strong possibility that the winner of the season finale between CSI and Roberts Wesleyan earns the final ECC playoff spot.
