Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS ON FOR CRITICAL CONFERENCE WIN AGAINST D'YOUVILLE, 79-75

Buffalo, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team picked up a critical win in conference play earlier today as they outlasted the D'Youville University Saints, 79-75.  The Dolphins are now 7-15 with the win and improve to 5-7 in conference play.  The Saints drop to 3-18 on the season and are now 2-7 against conference opponents.

Neither team was able to gain any significant advantage until the midway point of the first half when the Dolphins got hot from the outside.  Messiah Mallory connected on the first of three CSI triples in a two-minute span to put the Dolphins ahead by four.  Bryce Waterman then hit back-to-back threes, the second of which put the Dolphins ahead by eight.  Mallory would put the Dolphins ahead by double-digits for the first time moments later, but the Saints would trim the lead all the way down to two.  Another Waterman three with just under a minute to play would close the first-half scoring to put the Dolphins ahead by five heading into the intermission.

Waterman then proceeded to open the second half the same way he closed the first half putting the Dolphins ahead by eight with another three.  The CSI lead would quickly extend to double-digits, and the Dolphins went ahead by as many as fifteen with just inside of 13 minutes to play.  The Saints would respond with a 10-2 run to get back to within 7, but the Dolphins would lead by twelve with just two minutes remaining in the game.  From here, a series of CSI turnovers and empty possessions allowed the Saints to cut the lead all the way down to three with just under one minute remaining.  The Dolphins finally stopped the bleeding from the free throw line, but yet another turnover in the closing seconds set up a D'Youville score to make it a one-point game.  However, that basketball was followed by a technical foul against the Saints which allowed the Dolphins to extend the lead back to two from the line.  An intentional foul then afforded the Dolphins two free throws to go in front by two possessions which sealed the CSI win.

Waterman led the Dolphins in scoring with 26 points and he shot 5-10 from beyond the arc.  Mallory finished with an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double and shot an efficient 6-10 from the floor.  Chris Velasquez also scored in double-figures finishing with 11 points.  Will Kondrat provided much of the offense and rebounding for D'Youville finishing with 33 points and 15 boards.  He attempted 17 free-throws in the game as well and hit 15 of them.  Luke Thiesen and Renard Fontes Jules also scored in double-digits, but the Saints simply didn't shoot well as a unit.  The Saints finished shooting 32% from the field and were 3-26 from beyond the arc.  As for the Dolphins, they shot 45% from the field and 33% from three-point range.  For CSI, the win keeps them perfect against D'Youville in four games across the last two seasons.

With the win, the Dolphins have set the stage for a massive game against Queens College on Wednesday night at The Tank.  The Dolphins now hold a half-game lead over the Knights, but the Knights currently own the tiebreaker over CSI by virtue of their win over the Dolphins earlier this year.  With a win on Wednesday, the Dolphins will take ownership over the fate of their playoff push.  A loss would mean the Dolphins would need some help in order to qualify for the postseason.
