GAMEDAY: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKS TO EVEN UP ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST QUEENS COLLEGE

2/8/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team returns home this evening for a matchup with East Coast Conference and CUNY rival Queens College on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.  The Dolphins enter today's game with a 8-14 record this season and are 4-8 against the ECC.  The Knights enter tonight's game 6-15 on the year and are 4-7 against the East Coast Conference.  The Knights took the win in the first meeting this season giving them a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.  A CSI win in tonight's game would move the Dolphins ahead of the Knights in the conference standings while a Queens win would put them 1.5 games in front of CSI and secure the tiebreaker over the Dolphins.

During halftime of tonight's game between the Dolphins and Knights, there will be a special halftime ceremony recognizing the CSI faculty and staff members in attendance at the game.  All faculty and staff members are invited to join us on court for the halftime presentation.  If you are interested and did not RSVP, visit the ticketing table on your way into the gymnasium to check in at the event.

The Dolphins last played on Sunday against D'Youville wrapping up their two-game weekend trip in Buffalo.  In the closing seconds of the game, Jenalyse Alarcon scored the go-ahead basket to put the Dolphins up by one before clinching the CSI win with a block at the other end of the floor.  The Knights last played on Saturday against Molloy and came up just short against the Lions.  Trailing by twelve entering the fourth quarter, the Knights outscored the Lions 14-4 in the final period, but that wasn't enough as Queens suffered a two-point defeat.

Alarcon added another double-double on Sunday and has led the Dolphins in scoring and rebounding for the entire season.  She is also second on the team in assists behind only Kaia Johnson who found the cutting Alarcon for the game-winning basket on Sunday.  Ashley Lambert has been CSI's second-leading scorer for much of the year averaging just shy of 9.5 points per game.  However, Lambert and the rest of the Dolphins have seen their shooting numbers fall since the early weeks of the season and are now shooting 38% from the field and 31% from beyond the arc as a unit.

The Knights come in shooting 39% from the floor, but they are shooting only 25% from three-point range as a team.  Leading Queens in scoring is a pair of player averaging right around 13 points per game, Cecilia Lapertosa and Chelsea Reeves.  Lapertosa is also the team's leading rebounder and Reeves is the most dangerous shooter from the outside at 37.5% on the season.  Aside from Lapertosa, Khadija Demry is the only Knight shooting over 40% from the field, and she is the team's third-leading scorer at 8.7 points per game.

The Dolphins continue to possess complete control over their East Coast Conference playoff fate.  They currently are sixth in the standings, but with four conference games remaining they are still mathematically capable of finishing as high as the two seed.
