DOLPHINS SQUANDER FOUR-RUN LEAD IN FINAL INNING OF CONFERENCE OPENER LOSS TO QUEENS

Flushing, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team suffered a tough loss in their conference opener earlier today as they squandered a four-run lead in the ninth inning of a loss to Queens College.  The Dolphins led 9-5 entering the final half-inning, but CSI did not record an out in the inning and allowed five runs to score in the 10-9 defeat.  With the loss, CSI falls to 6-10 on the season.  Queens improves to 12-4 with their seventh straight win.

The Dolphins jumped ahead in the first inning on an A.J. Vigliotti home run that put them ahead 2-0.  The Dolphins would not fall behind again until the final at-bat of the game and maintained a commanding lead for much of the afternoon.  Queens would cut the CSI lead in half in the second, but the Dolphins scored seven unanswered runs to go ahead 8-1.  A Tylor Martinez three-run homer and an RBI single by Vigliotti were the big blows dealt by CSI during third and fourth inning rallies that put them in front by seven.

The Knights would cut the lead to 8-4 behind a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles in the fourth chasing Dolphins starter Ryan Kehoe from the game.  Steven Collica would come on in relief of Kehoe to stop the bleeding, and the CSI reliever would allow just one more run through the conclusion of the eighth inning.  The Dolphins also plated another run during that stretch on a Martinez RBI single, and the game went to ninth with the Dolphins leading, 9-5.  The ninth inning opened with three straight Queens singles followed by a 2-RBI double from Matt Filip.  An error on a fly ball to left scored two more runs to even up the score at nine and put the winning run on third base with nobody out.  A walk put runners on the corners, and soon after, a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score in a 10-9 Queens victory.

Michael Kehoe added two more hits as he continued to swing a hot bat for the Dolphins.  However, the CSI offense was powered by the efforts of Vigliotti and Martinez.  The duo combined for 7 RBI's in the game and finished 5-8 at the plate.  Fellow freshman Vincent Weigele had two hits in the game as well keeping up the trend of strong offensive games for CSI freshmen.  Kehoe and Collica were each charged with four runs allowed in the game and Alex Martinez suffered the loss in relief.  Six different Knights had multiple hits against CSI pitching and two Queens relievers combined to allow just three runs in the final six innings of play.  Johnnie Rodopolous pitched five of those innings and picked up the win, his first of the season.

The Dolphins will continue their four-game set against the Knights on Sunday when the series moves to the CSI Baseball Complex for a doubleheader.  First pitch of game one will be at noon as the Dolphins host a game on their home field for the first time this season.
