DOLPHINS SUFFER PAIR OF ONE-RUN LOSSES IN DOUBLEHEADER VS BLOOMFIELD

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team suffered a pair of one-run losses earlier today as they dropped both games in their doubleheader against Bloomfield College, 4-3 and 1-0.  The Dolphins fall to 1-6 to start their season and the Bears improve to 3-5 with the two victories.

GAME 1
It was a rough start on the mound for John Esposito in the first inning as he went down with an apparent leg injury after delivering a pitch.  He stayed in the game and ultimately allowed a two-RBI Justin Sanchez which put the Bears ahead 2-0.  CSI would get one run back on an Anthony Sutera RBI-single in the second, and neither team would score again until the fifth.  Luis Ramirez drove in the third Bears run on a sacrifice fly, but the Dolphins immediately got that run back on a Bears error in the bottom half of the same inning.  After the Bears scored on another sacrifice fly in the sixth, the Dolphins mounted yet another scoring threat in the home half of the inning.  CSI loaded the bases with one out, but Jake Myers hit into a double play to bring the inning to a close.  Still trailing by two in the ninth, Shendi Ulaj drove in a run with a two-out RBI-double, but he was stranded at second representing the tying run.

GAME 2
After the two sides combined for 14 hits in game one, game two was highlighted by the pitching and defense of both teams.  Ryan Kehoe got the start for the Dolphins and found himself in some early trouble following a pair of first-inning walks.  From there, he settled down nicely and went on to throw five hitless innings before the Bears finally got their first base-hit in the sixth.  On the other side, Bryan Guzman threw four innings of two-hit ball before giving way to Edwin Melendez.  Melendez also allowed just two hits and was able to escape a massive jam in the fifth due in part to his own defense on the mound.  Having turned aside the Dolphins in the fifth, the Bears finally struck against Kehoe with two outs in the sixth.  A slow ground ball towards the middle of the diamond was cut off by Myers in the hole, but Justin Rivera narrowly beat the throw to first to plate the game's only run.  The Bears lead was never put in jeopardy the rest of the way, and the Dolphins were shut out for the third time this season, 1-0.

The Dolphins will be right back in action tomorrow as they return to Staten Island University Hospital Community Park for another non-conference doubleheader against Caldwell University.  Game one gets underway at 12 PM.
