BASEBALL SETTLES FOR SPLIT OF DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST CALDWELL

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team wrapped up a four-game homestand earlier today against Caldwell University and earned a split of the non-conference doubleheader.  The Dolphins, now 2-7 following the split, won game one 7-2 and lost game two 15-2.  The Cougars were making their season debut today and open their season 1-1.

GAME 1
The Cougars struck first in game one getting on the board with the help of a Dolphins error.  The fielding miscue turned a single into two bases for Malik Little and Christian Petino Jr. immediately capitalized with an RBI base-hit for the first run of the game.  CSI would get even with an unearned run of their own in the next half-inning on a Domenick Castiglione RBI single.  The Dolphins would then go on to take the lead on a Vincent Weigele ground out in the fourth, and Shendi Ulaj would double home two more runs in the fifth.  This is all the run support CSI pitching would need as starter Christian Rice struck out 11 batters in six innings of work in the 7-2 Dolphins win.

GAME 2
The Dolphins fell behind early in the second game of the afternoon and never recovered.  The CSI pitching staff struggled with their command for the entire game walking ten batters and hitting three more.  Behind 4-0, the Dolphins would scratch out a run in the third, but this would be the final time the Dolphins scored until their last turn at bat.  CSI finished the game with just five hits and would be forced to settle for a split of their second doubleheader of the weekend.

Rice has his season off to a nice start following today's outing which evened his record at 1-1 and dropped his ERA below 2.00.  Weigele and Castiglione also continued to swing hot bats, but the Dolphins offense once again slowed down in game two.  After two well-pitched games on Saturday and a strong start from Rice, CSI pitching allowed a season-high in runs during Sunday's second game.

It won't be too long before the Dolphins have a chance to bounce back against the Cougars as they will play another doubleheader at Caldwell this coming Wednesday.  They will continue with non-conference play all the way through March 18th before the conference opener against Molloy University on March 21st.
