Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team faced the Caldwell University Cougars in a doubleheader for the second time in four days earlier today and once again settled for a split in the two games. The Dolphins took the win in eleven innings during game one, 9-8. Just like on Sunday, the Cougars won in decisive fashion in game two, 10-0. With the split, the Dolphins move to 3-8 on the season and the Cougars remain at the .500 mark with a 2-2 record.
GAME 1
The Cougars scored the first eight runs in game one forcing CSI starter Ryan Kehoe out of the game after four innings. From there, Nick Vilardi and John Esposito combined to hold the Cougars scoreless across the final seven innings of the game and opened the door for the CSI offense to stage an improbable comeback. In the fifth, the Dolphins scored three times behind a hit batter and a Shendi Ulaj two-RBI single. Two sacrifice flies made it a three-run game in the sixth, and John Castiglione tied the game with a pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh. Neither team would score again until the eleventh when Jake Myers delivered the game-winning RBI single to give the Dolphins the win, 9-8.
GAME 2
Caldwell scored twice in the first inning and this was all the offense they would need. They added four in the third and two more in the sixth to go ahead by ten, but the lead was never in any danger. The Dolphins had just three hits in the game, and outside of three scoreless innings from Aidan Kielty, the Cougars got the better of CSI pitching.
Castiglione delivered the big blow with his home run in game one, but the Dolphins also go two hits each from Anthony Iraci Shendi Ulaj, Christopher Hayes and Jake Myers. Those four Dolphins combined to drive in 5 runs and score 5 runs in the comeback win. In relief, Esposito gave the Dolphins five shutout innings to earn the win, his first of the season.
The Dolphins will next be in action on Saturday in another non-conference doubleheader as they take on Dominican University at noon.
