BASEBALL DROPS CONFERENCE SERIES OPENER AGAINST MERCY, 9-2

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened a four-game weekend series with Mercy College at the CSI Baseball Complex earlier today and suffered a loss to the Mavericks by a final score of 9-2.  The Dolphins fall to 10-18 on the season with the loss and are now 2-7 in conference play.  The Mavericks are now 7-25 on the season and 3-10 against conference opponents.

After the Mavericks stranded a runner at third in the first inning, the Dolphins got started with back-to-back hits in their half of the inning.  With Michael Kehoe on third and Shendi Ulaj on second, Vincent Weigele walked to load the bases.  An incredible diving catch in center by Jaden Caballero robbed AJ Vigliotti  of a hit, but the out brought home the first run of the game.  However, this was the only run the Dolphins would score, and this would be the final time CSI would score until the late innings.  The Mavericks got even on an unearned run in the second and took the lead for good on a sacrifice fly in the third.  Behind four hits, Mercy extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth, and the Mavericks would score once more in both the sixth and seventh.  Trailing by six, the Dolphins went on to load the bases with two outs in the eighth inning.  A walk brought in the second Dolphins run, but this was all that CSI would get as they went on to lose 9-2.

In addition to his run-saving catch in the first inning, Caballero went 5-5 at the plate for the Mavericks.  Kehoe also had multiple hits for the Dolphins ending the game 2-5 with two runs scored.  Ryan Kehoe got the start for the Dolphins and allowed six runs, five earned, on twelve hits in six innings of work.  The Mavericks finished the game with 17 while the Dolphins had just seven.  CSI also struggled hitting with runners on base, one of the deciding factors in the loss.

The Dolphins will be right back at it against Mercy tomorrow when they travel to Dobbs Ferry for a doubleheader with the Mavericks.  First pitch of game one will be at noon.
