DOLPHINS KEEP HOPES OF SERIES SPLIT ALIVE WITH WIN IN BACK END OF DOUBLEHEADER VS MERCY

Dobbs Ferry, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team visited Mercy College today for the second and third games in a four-game series against the Mavericks.  After struggling for offense in game one, the Dolphins secured a win in extra innings in game two behind a complete game effort from John Esposito.  With the split, the Dolphins will enter tomorrow's series finale 11-19 overall and 3-8 in conference play.  The Mavericks will enter the CSI Baseball Complex 8-26 on the season and 4-11 against conference opponents.

GAME 1
The Mavericks took the lead for good in the third inning on an RBI base hit by Zach Ashline, but Mercy would go on to add more insurance throughout the game.  Later that same inning, a passed ball brought home another run to put the Mavericks ahead 2-0.  Mercy then scored twice in the seventh to go ahead by four and once in the eighth to go in front 5-0.  The Dolphins finished the game with just four hits, two coming in a ninth inning that saw CSI score their first run.  However, the Dolphins would never get the tying run to the plate in the final inning, and they fell by a final score of 5-1.

GAME 2
John Esposito was dominant on the mound for the Dolphins in game two, but once again the CSI bats failed to produce a run through eight innings.  With one out in the ninth, an infield single followed by consecutive walks loaded the bases for the Dolphins.  A single by Vincent Weigele brought home a pair, and Nick Cippoletti singled home another to make it 3-0.  A Michael Crocco bunt brought home a fourth CSI run to put the Dolphins ahead by four, but they had already given Esposito all the run support he would need.  The Mavericks put two on the base in the home ninth, but Esposito was able to close the door on a potential rally and secure the shutout, 4-0.

Thomas Marten had a pair of hits in both games for the Dolphins, but the CSI offense generated only 10 hits between the two games.  Esposito held the Mavericks to just five hits in game two and pitched all nine innings to earn his fourth win of the season.  Weigele's two-RBI hit in game two gave the Dolphins their first lead since the first inning of Friday's series opener and was an elusive hit with runners in scoring position.

The Dolphins will have a chance to salvage a split of their series with the Mavericks at home tomorrow.  The current scheduled start time for tomorrow's game is 12 PM, but rainfall in the area could push the start time back to 1 PM or 2 PM.
