DOLPHINS DROP SERIES FINALE TO MAVERICKS IN SLUGFEST, 16-8

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team dropped today's series finale against the Mercy College Mavericks in a 24-run slugfest by a final score of 16-8.  The Dolphins once led in the game 8-4, but the Mavericks scored the final twelve runs to secure the victory.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 11-20 on the season and are now 3-9 in conference play.  The Mavericks are now 9-26 on the season and 5-11 against conference opponents.

CSI starter Steven Collica ran into early trouble in the first inning culminating with a three-run homer by Steven Schoen.  Trailing 3-0 before their first turn at bat, the Dolphins answered with two runs in the first inning to make it 3-2.  The Mavericks got one run back on a Jaden Caballero single in the next half-inning, but from here Collica would settle in and allow the CSI bats a chance to take the lead.  Now behind 4-2, the Dolphins scored four times in the second in, once more in the third, and one final time in the fourth.  This put CSI ahead 8-4, a score that would stand until the top of the sixth inning.

Trailing by four runs, the Mavericks loaded the bases against Collica in the sixth to force a Dolphins pitching change.  Alex Martinez came on in relief and was immediately victimized by an error which cost the Dolphins an out at the plate.  With the bases still loaded and the score 8-5, the next four hitters proceeded to deliver back-to-back singles, a sacrifice fly, and a double.  Now leading 11-10, the Mavericks tacked on another run in the inning with one final hit, their sixth in the frame.  Mercy would never relinquish the lead, and after scoring in each of the first four innings, the Dolphins did not score another run.  The Mavericks added four more insurance runs in the eighth on their way to a 16-8 victory.

The two teams combined for 24 runs and 37 hits in the game, a matchup that was easily the most offensively-dominant of the four-game set.  Despite losing the game by eight runs, the Dolphins were outhit by just one.  The biggest difference between the two sides at the plate was the extra-base hit tally for the two teams.  The Mavericks had four including a three-run homer in the first inning while the Dolphins had just one.  17 of CSI's 18 hits were singles and most of those came in the first four innings of the game.  For the Dolphins, Michael Kehoe, Shendi Ulaj, and Vincent Weigele all had three hits each. Thomas Marten, Nick Cippoletti, and Anthony Iraci each had two hits as well.

With all twelve games remaining on the CSI schedule coming against the East Coast Conference, the Dolphins will be in action each of the next three weekends beginning this Friday.  First up is a four-game series against the Lincoln University Lions, one of the teams CSI is chasing in the conference standings.
