ESPOSITO STRIKES OUT 200TH CAREER BATTER AS DOLPHINS BEAT SPARTANS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2000

Panoma, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened a four-game series with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College earlier today and earned a split of a doubleheader on the road.  After an eighth inning error brought home an unearned run in a 2-1 game one loss, the Dolphins bounced back for a big 10-3 win in game two.  With the split of today's games, the Dolphins are 15-22 on the season and 7-11 in conference play.  The Spartans end the day 19-23 on the season and 12-6 against the ECC.

GAME 1
The Spartans got on the board quickly against Ryan Kehoe with a long solo home run off the bat of C.J. Cumbo in the first inning of game one.  After that, Kehoe would not surrender another run in six innings of work allowing just three hits and striking out eight.  The Dolphins would get him his first run support in the fifth when Jake Myers delivered a game-tying RBI single to even the score at 1-1.  Following a single down the right field line by Angel Santiago, the Dolphins had runners on the corners with two outs in the inning.  However, Santiago was caught stealing second to bring the inning to a premature close.  The game's next and final run would come in the eighth inning after an error by the Dolphins turned a single into two bases for Cumbo.  He was bunted over to third moments later, and a sacrifice fly brought home an unearned go-ahead run.  Trailing 2-1 entering the ninth, the Dolphins got the tying run into scoring position, but a hard-hit line drive straight into the glove of Spartans shortstop Andrew Jemison ended the game with an unassisted double play.

GAME 2
The Dolphins loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning of game two, and they would go on to score the game's first run on a ground ball that resulted in the first out of the frame.  However, this is all of the run support the Dolphins would give starter John Esposito until the fifth.  With two out in the top half of that inning, a Spartans throwing error brought home the second Dolphins run to put CSI ahead 2-0.  It wasn't until the next half-inning that Esposito would surrender his first hit, and he continued to hold the Spartans scoreless entering the seventh.  In the sixth, the Dolphins struck for their biggest inning of the day behind five hits and a pair of Spartan errors.  Leading 7-0, a solo home run by Greg DiGiaro got the Spartans on the board, but this was the only run they would score against Esposito.  The Dolphins starter exited the game at the start of the eighth, and the Dolphins extended their lead to 10-1 in the top of the ninth.  Two runs would come home for the Spartans in the bottom half of the final inning, but that wasn't nearly enough as the Dolphins took the win 10-3.

Bryan Birkhead has a six-hit day for the Dolphins with a pair of hits in game one and a 4-5 effort in game two.  Vincent Weigele also had two hits in the first of the two games and Nick Cippoletti had two hits in the second game.  Kehoe and Esposito combined to allow just two runs in 13 innings of work putting the Dolphins in a position where they had the opportunity to win both games.  In his game two start, Esposito picked up his 200th career strikeout and earned his sixth win of the season.  He remains unbeaten against conference opponents this season and is second in the ECC in ERA.

The Dolphins are scheduled to continue their series against the Spartans on Sunday with a doubleheader at the CSI Baseball Complex.  Weather permitting, game one is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.  Both games in the series-ending doubleheader will be seven-inning games after both games played today were nine-inning matchups.
