DOLPHINS CAN'T PROTECT FIVE-RUN LEAD IN LOSS TO SPARTANS

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team was back in action today after this weekend's rain outs as they continued their series against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College.  After the Dolphins took an early 6-1 lead, the Spartans scored 19 of the next 23 runs in a 20-10 CSI loss.  With the defeat, the Dolphins fall to 15-23 on the season and 7-12 in conference play.  The Spartans are now 20-23 on the season and 13-6 against the East Coast Conference.

The Dolphins got off to a strong start at the plate to open the game scoring at least once in each of the first four innings.  In the first, AJ Vigliotti singled home the first Dolphins run to give CSI the lead, but the Dolphins stranded the bases loaded and scored just once.  After the Spartans went on to tie the score with one run in the second, the Dolphins scored five more unanswered runs.  Two came in the second as Michael Kehoe and Thomas Marten each singled home a run to make it 3-1.  A double-play grounder in the third made it 4-1, and Marten crushed a two-run homer over the right-center field wall in the fourth put CSI in front 6-1.

Leading by five, CSI starter Christian Rice came within one out of making it through the fifth inning, but a Spartans rally brought home two runs and forced the Dolphins to go to the bullpen.  In relief, Angelo DeFilippis allowed two inherited runners to score and surrendered on additional run to even the score at six.  However, the Dolphins once again took a two-run lead in the sixth behind a walk, one base hit, two wild pitches, and a Spartans error.  In front 8-6 entering the seventh, the game unraveled quickly for CSI as the Spartans erupted for nine runs in the inning.  The inning began with back-to-back extra-base hits before the Dolphins recorded consecutive outs.  With two away, the Spartans delivered seven consecutive hits, including two home runs, and finished the inning ahead 15-8.  The Spartans would also go on to score five of the game's last seven runs to take the win 20-10.

The two teams combined for 30 runs on 35 hits in the game as the Spartans pitching struggled in the first half of the game while the Dolphins pitching struggle in the second half.  Four Spartans had at least three hits and Greg DiGiaro had 5 RBI to lead the STAC offensive surge.  The Dolphins offense was driven primarily by Kehoe and Marten who had four hits each.  Kehoe also drove in a pair and Marten had 4 RBI.  With the final game of the series looming tomorrow afternoon, the Dolphins used seven pitchers and the Spartans used five.  This inevitably leads to questions regarding who will be available for each team as the Dolphins come in clinging to the final ECC playoff spot and the Spartans hanging on to hopes of securing the top seed in the conference.

Tomorrow's series finale will be played at 3:30 PM at the CSI Baseball Complex.  The Dolphins come in just one game ahead of Mercy in the loss column in the ECC standings.  Any tie in the standings between the Dolphins and Mavericks would result in CSI missing the playoffs.  Including tomorrow's game with the Spartans, CSI has five games remaining on their conference schedule while the Mavericks have four.
