DOLPHINS FAIL TO SALVAGE SERIES FINALE FROM SPARTANS

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team finished their series with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College earlier today and suffered another lopsided defeat by a final score of 21-6.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 15-24 on the season and 7-13 in conference play.  The Spartans are now 21-23 on the season and 14-6 against the East Coast Conference.  The defeat also knocks the Dolphins out of the final playoff position in the ECC and they have lost control over their own destiny in the chase for the conference's final playoff spot.

Just as the Dolphins did on Monday, the Spartans opened the game by scoring at least once in each of the first four innings.  In the first, STAC brought home six, but the Dolphins answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  From here, the Dolphins would score just twice more the rest of the way while the Spartans would score four times in each of the next three innings. With two outs and the bases loaded in the second, Gregory DiGiaro connected on a grand slam to increase the Spartans lead back to six.  DiGiaro would then cap off a four-run third with another home run, this one a two-run shot.  The Spartans also scored four times in the fourth, once in the fifth, and twice more in the seventh.  This forced the Dolphins to use six pitchers in the game, and the Dolphins never got any closer than six runs beyond the second inning.

The Spartans finished with at least 20 runs for the second straight game, and they collected 20 hits in today's series finale.  The Dolphins also tallied double-figures in the hits column as they finished with six run on ten hits.  Thomas Marten and John Castiglione each had two hits for the Dolphins and Vincent Weigele drove in a pair of runs.  Of the six CSI pitchers to enter the game, only Alex Martinez was not scored upon as he pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

The Dolphins have four games remaining on their schedule against D'Youville this weekend and are now tied with Mercy College for the final playoff spot in the East Coast Conference.  With Mercy holding the tiebreaker, the Dolphins must outperform the Mavericks by one game during the season's final weekend.  The Mavericks face Lincoln University in a four-game series beginning on Thursday so the Dolphins will know if they are alive ahead in the playoff chase entering their season finale on Sunday.
