DOLPHINS HANG ON TO BEAT SAINTS BY ONE IN SERIES OPENER, 6-5

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened their series with D'Youville University earlier today today as they hung one to defeat the Saints, 6-5.  With the win, the Dolphins improve to 16-24 on the season and 8-13 in conference play.  The Saints are now 18-23 on the season and 8-11 against the East Coast Conference.  More importantly, the Dolphins stay alive in the hunt for the final East Coast Conference playoff spot.

CSI starter Ryan Kehoe was forced over to throw over 30 pitches in the first inning as he walked in the game's first run to open the scoring.  However, the Saints would strand the bases loaded and the Dolphins proceeded to take the lead in the next half-inning.  RBI singles by Angel Santiago and Jake Myers put the Dolphins ahead 2-1, and CSI would lead from that point forward.  AJ Vigliotti, Vincent Weigele, and Santiago each drove in a run in the third to put the Dolphins in front by five, and the Saints would get one back in the fourth to make it 5-2.  Working with over 100 pitches in the fifth, Kehoe struck out consecutive batters to strand two on base and keep the Dolphins in front by three.

In the following inning, the Dolphins turned to Aidan Kielty out of the bullpen for the fifth straight game.  After surrendering a run on back-to-back hits to start the inning, Kielty escaped without any further damage.  Vigliotti singled home another run in the seventh to put the Dolphins ahead 6-3, and that score would stand entering the eighth inning.  Alex Martinez would come on in relief of Kielty to start the eighth, and he surrendered a pair of runs before recording an out.  Consecutive walks, two stolen bases, and a double made it a 6-5 game, but Martinez would strand the tying run at third.  Still ahead by one entering the ninth, Martinez worked around a pair of two-out Saints hits to earn the save in a 6-5 Dolphins win.

Vigliotti and Weigele each had multiple hits for the Dolphins and both Vigliotti and Santiago drove in two runs.  Kehoe allowed two runs on four hits and struck out nine in five innings of work to pick up the win.  The CSI bullpen allowed three runs in the final four innings, but held on to record several key outs with runners on base.

The Dolphins will know if they will have a chance to qualify for the ECC playoff by the end of their doubleheader against the Saints tomorrow.  If Mercy wins over Lincoln at 3:30, CSI is officially eliminated from playoff contention.  If Mercy loses, the Dolphins can make the playoffs with wins in each of their last three games.
