MERCY REMAINS UNBEATEN AGAINST DOLPHINS WITH 2-0 WIN IN CONFERENCE PLAY

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team faced Mercy University for the fourth time in program history earlier today as the Mavericks remained unbeaten against CSI with a 2-0 victory.  Mercy went ahead 1-0 early and never relinquished the lead on their way to a second goal with 33 minutes to play.  That 2-0 stood the rest of the way as the Mavericks earned their third conference win of the year.  For the Dolphins, the loss drops them to 0-8-2 on the season and 0-3-1 in conference play.  The Mavericks improve to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 against the ECC.  Mercy now leads the all-time series 4-0.

Mercy found the back of the net for the first time on their fifth shot of the match just over ten minutes into the first half.  Following a corner kick that rebounded off heavy traffic in the box, Amiah Washington was waiting on the doorstep to put a shot past CSI goalkeeper Sara Villacres.  Ahead 1-0, the Mavericks maintained constant pressure on Villacres throughout the half, but the senior finished with ten saves during the first 45 minutes.

After slowly increasing their time of possession later in the first half, the Dolphins once again suffered from a significant disadvantage in possession time early in the second half.  As a result, the Mavericks continued to generate quality scoring chances, ultimately leading to the second goal of the match.  On just their second shot attempt of the half twelve minutes after the break, Anocksu Dixon scored off an assist from Washington to double the Mercy lead.  This came moments after the best CSI scoring chance of the match on an Emily Albano header.  Following the Albano attempt and the subsequent Mercy goal, the Dolphins would register just one additional shot the rest of the way.  Meanwhile, Villacres added three more saves in what would go down as a 2-0 defeat.

The Mavericks finished the match with a 26-2 shots advantage and Villacres made 13 saves.  Villacres was joined by Albano as the two Dolphins to play the entire match with four Mavericks doing the same.  In addition to the attempt by Albano, Caitlyn Thompson accounted for the second CSI shot attempt.  Klarissa Melgoza and Jenna Como also made their first home start of the season after each scored a goal during their season debut outings on October 2nd and October 5th respectively.
