Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

GAME-TYING GOAL IN CLOSING MINUTES FORCES TIE BETWEEN DOLPHINS AND SPARTANS, 2-2

Staten Island, NY - Earlier today, the College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team faced St. Thomas Aquinas College in a back-and-forth match and played the Spartans to a 2-2 draw.  After trailing 1-0, the Dolphins got even on a Taryn Hilke goal late in the first half.  The Dolphins then went in front early in the second half behind a Klarissa Melgoza goal.  The 2-1 CSI lead stood until the closing minutes when Amalie Steen tied the score for the Spartans from in close.  The draw sends the Dolphins to 0-6-2 and the Spartans to 0-5-3.  CSI ends the day 0-2-1 in conference play and the Spartans are now 0-1-1 against the ECC.

The Spartans challenged CSI starting goalkeeper Oksana Zahirna very often in the opening minutes of the match with four shots in the first fifteen minutes.  As for the Dolphins, they managed just one shot during that time and finished the first half with three.  Despite the shots advantage for STAC, Zahirna and the CSI defense managed to keep the game scoreless until Kaitlyn McGuire netted the game's first goal with less than five minutes to go before halftime.  Now trailing for the first time, the Dolphins responded with a goal of their own by Taryn Hilke less than three minutes later.  Assisted by Riley Hammond, the goal was Hilke's first, and Hammond registered her first point of the season.

With the score tied to start the second half, the Dolphins wasted no time taking the lead following the break.  Just minutes inter her collegiate debut, Melgoza followed a blocked shot and scored her first career goal.  This put the Dolphins ahead 2-1, a score that stood for over thirty minutes.  During this time, both teams connected with the post once and had multiple chances to add to the goal tally.  It wasn't until the 83rd minute when new CSI goalkeeper Sara Villacres finally surrendered a goal to Steen from in front.  After McGuire drew in the CSI defense, she set up Steen one-on-one with the CSI goalkeeper for the game-tying goal.  This would be the final score of the match as the Dolphins settled for the 2-2 draw.

Chloe Ludwick, Emily Albano, and Megan Meagher all played 90 minutes for the Dolphins and Nadia Evola led the Dolphins in shots on goal with three.  Isabella Radovini also had three shots, one of which connected with the post late in the second half.  Six Spartans played 90 minutes as well, and STAC only used three substitutions in the match for a total of 108 minutes.

The Dolphins will next play on Saturday when they continue conference play against CUNY rival Queens College.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
