Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN'S BASKETBALL PULLS AWAY FROM SNHU IN FINAL MINUTES TO EARN FIRST WIN, 69-60

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team earned their first win of the season earlier today as they closed out the 2024 Tournament of Heroes with a victory over Southern New Hampshire University, 69-60.  After a back-and-forth affair which saw both teams vying for their first win, the Dolphins pulled away in the closing minutes to secure the nine-point win.  The Dolphins win for the first time in the Division II history of the Tournament of Heroes to improve to 1-1.  The Penmen fall to 0-2 with the loss.

The two teams traded baskets early until the CSI bench helped put the Dolphins in front by five through seven minutes.  Asa Kone and Mitchell Wiggan led the CSI bench unit with ten straight points during a six minute stretch in the first half.  The Dolphins would go ahead by as many as eight during the first 20 minutes, but a 13-4 run by the Penmen gave them their first lead of the game.  That lead would grow as large as four in the 4:30 leading up to halftime, but a JJ Chestnut buzzer-beater from half court sent the game to halftime with the Dolphins trailing, 34-33.

The teams once again traded baskets for the first several minutes of the second half, but the Penmen went in front by as many as six points with 10:38 to play.  From there, the Dolphins stepped up their play at both ends of the floor led by the scoring of their guards.  Following five straight points by Chestnut, Aaron Goldstein knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer.  This was followed by three straight threes from Justin Zieris and one more from Goldstein.  After the Goldstein three, the Dolphins never let the Penmen get any closer than two possessions again, and CSI would go on to win by nine, 69-60.

Goldstein led the Dolphins in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points and Ray Daniels led SNHU with 21.  Joining Goldstein in double-figures were Chestnut, Kone, Wiggan, and Zieris.  Kone also had 8 rebounds and Zieris added 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Dolphins will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Holy Family University for their first road game of the season.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
