Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS RALLY LATE IN FIRST-EVER WIN AGAINST EAST STROUDSBURG, 61-55

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team earned their first-ever win against East Stroudsburg University earlier today as they rallied in the final quarter to outlast the Warriors, 61-55.  Ahead of today's game, the Dolphins recognized the Go4TheGoal Foundation and their work to support children battling cancer.  CSI Athletics also presented Jenalyse Alarcon with the basketball to commemorate her reaching 1000 points for her career.  On the court, the win improves the Dolphins to 5-3 on the season, and the loss drops the Warriors to 3-3.  Despite the CSI victory, the Warriors still lead the all-time series two games to one.

The Dolphins got off to a very slow start shooting and connected on just three of fourteen shots during the opening quarter.  Meanwhile, the Warriors were an efficient 8-15, and East Stroudsburg built a lead of nine points through the first ten minutes.  The Dolphins shot the ball more efficiently in the second quarter and began to work their way closer.  However, the big difference-maker for the Dolphins leading up to halftime was their outside shooting.  Alexa Quirolo connected on a trio of three-pointers in the second quarter, and Amber Abusbeih added one more late in the period.  After trailing by as many as eleven, the Dolphins ended the first half trailing by just three.

The third quarter began in nightmarish fashion for the Warriors who dealt with both turnover issues and foul trouble for the entirety of the period.  ESU turned the ball over more than ten times in the quarter, and the Dolphins attempted sixteen free throws, making twelve.  However, the Dolphins shot just 2-14 from the field in the third, and the Warriors ended the period on a 7-0 run.  Leading by three entering the fourth, ESU went in front by as many as five early in the quarter.  From there, the Dolphins seized control behind the scoring of Kyra Rose.  The junior scored seven in the quarter, and combined with several more CSI takeaways, the Dolphins were able to close out a six-point victory.

The Dolphins attempted 30 free throws in the game making 21.  CSI also forced 26 ESU turnovers and limited the Warriors to just a single made three-pointer.  Leading the way offensively for the Dolphins was Dana Phelan with 17 points.  Jenalyse Alarcon, Quirolo, and Rose all finished in double-figures as well, but the Dolphins shot just 33% from the field in the win.  Despite 49% shooting and 20 points from Emily Chmiel, the Warriors could not overcome their late-game turnovers and a huge disparity in free throws made.

The Dolphins will visit Fairfield University for an exhibition on Tuesday before opening conference play on Friday against Daemen University.  Tip off at The Tank is scheduled for 5:30 PM.  Tickets will be required for all CSI Basketball home games beginning on Friday.  Purchase tickets for all remaining home games at the link below or visit csidolphins.com/tickets.
