BASEBALL SEES LATE LEAD GET AWAY IN LOSS TO WILMINGTON, 10-3

Myrtle Beach, SC – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team continued their trip in Myrtle Beach with their fourth game in three days earlier today as they lost to Wilmington University, 10-3.  Despite the decisive win for the Wildcats, the Dolphins led the game through seven before surrendering eight runs in the final two innings.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 1-3 and the win improves Wilmington to 3-1.

A leadoff single followed by a Dolphins error opened the door for the Wildcats in the first inning and Wilmington was quickly to capitalize.  With the first two men aboard, a sacrifice bunt advance both runners into scoring position.  A second error followed allowing two runs to score before before each of the last two outs was recorded at home.  First a runner attempting to score from second on a single was cut down at the plate.  Moments later, the final out was recorded on a caught stealing at the plate.

Behind 2-0, the Dolphins would get on the board for the first time in the bottom of the second.  Vincent Weigele got things started with a one-out hit which was followed by two consecutive singles from Anthony Sutera and Jayden Waterman.  This loaded the bases for Michael Plaermo who drove in the first CSI run on a fielder's choice.  A walk then loaded the bases for Bryan Birkhead who drove in two more with the fourth CSI hit of the inning.  This would give CSI their first lead, but this would also be the last time the Dolphins would score.

The 3-2 Dolphins lead stood until CSI starter Gerard Santos exited the game in the eighth inning.  Alex Martinez would come in relief of the debuting Dolphin and began his outing with a leadoff walk.  A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner and an Erik Grady single tied the game.  A two-run homer by Jack McDonald then gave Wilmington the lead for good.  Martinez finished the inning without any more damage, but the Wildcats would score five more off the CSI bullpen in the ninth as they went on to win 10-3.

Three of the four CSI hits came in their two-run second inning as Wilmington pitching shut down the CSI offense for much of the game.  Similarly Gerard Santos allowed just five hits in seven innings of work and was not charged with an earned run.  The Wilmington bullpen did not allow a single hit though Wildcats pitching did issue seven walks.

The Dolphins will play the final game of their Myrtle Beach trip tomorrow when they take on a familiar opponent in Adelphi University.  First pitch is schedule for 10:00 AM.
