Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS SURRENDER LEAD IN CLOSING MINUTES OF FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF LOSS TO UDC, 70-67

Washington, DC - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team held the lead for much of their first round ECC Women's Basketball Championship matchup with UDC, but the #4 seed Firebirds came from behind in the final quater to defeat the #5 seed Dolphins, 70-67.  The Dolphins came within seconds of beating UDC in the tournament's first round for the second straight year and led by as many as 17 points in the game.  The Firebirds, who are perfect against the Dolphins in the regular season all-time, are now 7-1 against CSI following the win.

The Dolphins fell behind 2-0 in the opening minutes, but CSI would not trail again until the final two minutes.  The Dolphins took their first lead on a three-pointer by Ashley Lambert, who had a strong game shooting from the outside.  Lambert connected on a pair of threes and two free-throws in the first to help the Dolphins build a four-point advantage in the first ten minutes.  The Dolphins then scored six of their first nine points from the line in the second as several key players got into foul trouble for UDC.  Behind the offense of Kaia Johnson and Jenalyse Alarcon, the Dolphins built a lead as large as 17 and went into halftime ahead by 15.

The Firebirds came out of the halftime break strong and quickly pulled to within six points.  However, Alarcon and Lambert continued to score key points for the Dolphins that kept CSI ahead by double-digits.  Lambert connected on two threes late in the quarter, and Alarcon sent the game to the fourth with a free-throw.  After the Dolphins were able to fend off a Firebirds rally in the third, the fourth quarter belonged to UDC.  The Firebirds got to within one score for the first time with 4:27 remaining.  Two minutes later, a clutch jumper by Johnson put CSI ahead by five, but this would be the final field goal for the Dolphins.  Three of CSI's 29 turnovers came in the final two minutes, and the Firebirds closed the game on an 9-1 run to win, 70-67.

Alarcon led CSI with 18, and both Lambert and Johnson scored 16.  Alarcon recorded a double-double as well grabbing 12 rebounds, and the Dolphins shot nearly 47% from the field.  The Firebirds were led in scoring by Destiny Ryles with 23 points.  Ryles also had 3 steals and Latavia Jackson had 6 as the Dolphins turned the ball over 29 times.

The Dolphins have qualified for the ECC postseason in both years that they have been eligible, but next season will see a great deal of roster turnover for the Dolphins.  5 seniors will depart the program, and the team will need to depend heavily on their underclassmen and next year's recruiting class.  CSI finishes the season 10-18 overall, and 7-10 in conference play.
