Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

SEASON ENDS FOR MEN'S BASKETBALL WITH LOSS TO DAEMEN IN ECC SEMIFINALS, 68-56

Sparkill, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team saw their season come to an end earlier today in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference Men's Basketball Championship as they fell to Daemen University, 68-56.  The Dolphins finish the season with a record of 19-10, a 10-win improvement over 2022-2023.  The Wildcats advance to face #1 seed St. Thomas Aquinas College looking to dethrone the Spartans as the reigning ECC champions.

Both teams started very slowly at the offensive end of the floor and neither team reached double-digit points until nearly seven minutes into the game.  At this point in the first half, Daemen led CSI 11-6, but this would be the last time either team scored for nearly three minutes.  The Wildcats finally snapped the scoreless stretch with just over ten minutes remaining before halftime, and the Dolphins ended a five and a half minutes scoreless drought of their own 30 seconds later.  Bryce Waterman would pull CSI to within three from beyond the arc soon after, but Daemen ended the half on a 12-5 run to extend their lead to ten at the intermission.

Following halftime, Daemen began to heat up from the outside and extended their lead to 14 early in the second half.  The Dolphins pulled back to within single-digits on a Waterman three with 13:35 remaining, but this was the second of only three CSI three-pointers made in the game.  Despite struggling from distance, consecutive baskets from Messiah Mallory would pull the Dolphins to within five.  The Dolphins would then cut the lead to three from the free-throw line, but this was as close as they would get.  The Wildcats would answer the CSI push with a 12-0 run that effectively put the game out of reach.  The Dolphins would not get within single-digits again the rest of the way as they went on to lose 68-56.

The Dolphins were nearly able to overcome their worst shooting percentage of the season with their second half surge, but CSI ultimately ended the game shooting 28% from the field and 14% from three in the loss.  No Dolphin scored in double-figures, and Dylan Fasoyiro led all scorers with 23 points.  Fasoyiro was joined by Waterman as the only players to hit multiple threes, and the two teams combined to shoot 10-44 from beyond the arc.

The Dolphins team looking to return to the playoffs next season will look quite a bit different as CSI will lose starters Jordan McAllister and Bryce Waterman to graduation.  Reserves Justin Zieris and Adeleye Oyekanmi will also be departing the program leaving opportunities for existing role players and new recruits to fill the vacancies.  The team will be looking to build upon their best season since joining NCAA Division II and take the next step towards winning a conference championship in 2024-2025.
