POLEMENI BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON STOLEN BASE RECORD AS DOLPHINS ERUPT FOR 17 RUNS AGAINST CALDWELL

Caldwell, NJ – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team won their second straight game today as they erupted for 17 runs in a victory over Caldwell University.  The Dolphins improve to 14-27 on the year with win and take the season series with the Cougars two games to one.  The Cougars fall to 10-24 with the loss.  In the sixth inning of the Dolphins win, Chris Polemeni swiped second base as the tail runner in a double steal, his 28th stolen base of the season.  This gives him sole possession of the program's single-season record for stolen bases, a record that has stood since 1982 when Val Cyrus stole 27 bags.  Not only did Polemeni break the longstanding record, but he has done so without being caught stealing.

Speaking of the milestone, Baseball head coach Michael Mauro said, "the single-season stolen base record has stood for a very long time, and to watch Chris break it and earn a place in the record books makes me very proud as his coach."  Polemeni's record is the latest in a season full of milestones for the team.  Earlier this year, Mauro earned his 300th career win.  Thomas Marten also recorded his 100th hit earlier this season.

The Dolphins fell behind by two runs early, but CSI immediately took the lead for good behind a huge second inning at the plate.  Marten opened the scoring in the five-run inning with a two-run homer.  Anthony Sutera then singled home a run before an RBI groundout by Michael Palermo brought home another.  Finally, Bryan Birkhead capped off the inning with another RBI hit to give the Dolphins a 5-2 lead.  In the third, Caldwell would pull back to within a run with a two-spot, but once again the Dolphins answered with a big inning.  With two on, Vincent Weigele singled home a run, and a bases loaded walk brought home one more.  However, the big blow in the inning was a 2-RBI double by Nicholas Rodriguez as the Dolphins went ahead 9-4.  Caldwell would get one run back in the fifth, but the Cougars stranded the bases loaded trailing by four.  From here, the Dolphins scored the next two runs before the Cougars scored for the final time in the seventh.  Led by a pair of 2-RBI hits from Sutera and Palermo, the Dolphins would score six in the eighth to go ahead by eleven and put the game out of reach.

Five Dolphins had two hits in the game, and Birkhead led the way with a 3-5 effort.  Both Palermo and Sutera drove in three runs as well.  Nick Pusinelli got the start and allowed four runs in four innings.  Four CSI relievers then combined to allow two runs on five hits across the last five innings of the game.  In addition to the record-setting stolen base by Polemeni, the Dolphins stole three more bases in the game.

The Dolphins will take the field for the final time in the 2024 season on Saturday when they host Holy Family University on Heroes Day.
