DOLPHINS FALL TO COUGARS IN 2024 SEASON-OPENER, 5-0

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team failed to score in today's season-opener as they fell to the Caldwell University Cougars by a score of 5-0.  The Dolphins drop their first game on their new home turf at the CSI Outdoor Track & Field Complex to drop to 0-1 on the season.  Beginning their year with a victory, the Cougars get off to a 1-0 start.  Caldwell also claims the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The first goal came less than three and a half minutes after kickoff as the Cougars struck first on a long shot by Melissa Pires.  The shot, taken into a strong wind and seemingly headed high, sank just below the crossbar to beat Dolphins goalkeeper Sara Villacres.  The one goal Cougars lead would stand until the final fifteen minutes of the half when Melissa Martinez doubled the Caldwell advantage with her first goal of the season.  Assisted on a through ball by Lea-Sophie Masching, Martinez tucked the second Cougars score beneath the crossbar.  Just over five minutes later, the Martinez would score for a second time of a cross from Alexa Peto.  This would send the game to halftime with the Cougars in front 3-0.

After the halftime break, the Dolphins held the Cougars off the board for over 20 minutes while generating their first scoring chances of the game.  However, the Dolphins failed to get on the board before the Cougars once again added to their lead in the 68th minute.  After coming up just short on multiple chances, Taina Gervais registered the first of her two goals on a long strike into the top right-hand corner of the net.  Just eight minutes later Gervais scored her second on a rebound of yet another Villacres save, and the Cougars would go on to win by a final score of 5-0.

Villacres remained under constant pressure in goal for the Dolphins, but she recorded 13 saves in a resilient effort.  Isabella Radovini and Caitlyn Thompson each registered a single shot accounting for all of the CSI offense.  Pires netted her first of the year for Caldwell, and both Martinez and Gervais scored their first two goals of the 2024 campaign.

The Dolphins will be back in action on the road this weekend when they face Felician University on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM.  The Dolphins will be looking to remain unbeaten against the Golden Falcons as they will enter Sunday's match with a 2-0-1 record against Felician.
