12/10/2025 10:00:00 AM

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's basketball team continues East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday evening in Sparkill, NY, as they take on St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Dolphins are looking to snap a nine-game losing streak against the Spartans; their only win in the series came during the 1978–79 season, an 87–82 victory in Staten Island.

In their most recent meeting on Feb. 15, 2025, the Dolphins trailed 47–37 at halftime before ultimately falling 94–83. Three returning players played key roles in that matchup: JJ Chestnut led CSI with 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists, followed by Aaron Goldstein with 17 points and Mitchell Wiggan with 10 points and three steals.

Tonight's game resumes play from December 6, when action was halted due to unplayable court conditions. The contest will pick back up with the Spartans leading 5-0 and 18:31 remaining in the first half.

Since the suspension, the Dolphins returned to action on Monday night for a non-conference matchup against Cheyney University (Pa.), where they set a Division II program record for most points scored in a single game with a 123-83 victory. Eric Tynes led all scorers with 27 points, shooting 7-11 (64%) from behind the arc and Wiggan followed with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Every Dolphin who checked in Monday night recorded at least one point. Rookie Andrew Benedict secured his second straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Brandon Torres also added 14 points and three assists. Asa Kone finished with 13 points, and Goldstein notched nine points while leading the team with eight assists.

Following last night's win, the Dolphins now feature four players averaging double figures: Goldstein (20.0 ppg), Chestnut (11.8), Wiggan (11.6), and Tynes (10.7). STAC enters with five players averaging double-digit scoring, led by a team-high 16.4 ppg on 30% shooting from three. The Dolphins have raised their team field-goal percentage to 44% (252-569), while the Spartans are shooting 46%. CSI currently leads the conference in scoring at 84.6 ppg and ranks second in points allowed at 77.4 ppg.
