STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's basketball team remained undefeated at home Saturday afternoon, defeating Holy Family University in the Tank to improve to 9-4 overall and 7-0 on their home floor.
After the Tigers scored the opening basket, the Dolphins responded with a 9-0 run fueled by Asa Kone, Eric Tynes, and Aaron Goldstein. CSI's lead was trimmed to four, 9-5, but a Goldstein three-pointer and a five-point stretch from Joey Poulin, highlighted by a layup and a three, pushed the advantage back to seven, 17-10. JJ Chestnut later drilled a triple to give the Dolphins their first double-digit lead of the contest, 20-10.
Mitchell Wiggan and Chestnut continued to build momentum as CSI extended its lead to 15, 25-10. Goldstein knocked down two free throws to stretch the margin to 18, and another Goldstein three capped the first half with the Dolphins holding a 49-33 advantage at the break.
CSI stayed hot in the second half, shooting 43 percent (6-14) from beyond the arc and an efficient 63 percent (24-38) from the field overall. Holy Family opened the half with four quick points to cut the deficit to 12, 49-35, but Poulin answered with a three-pointer, followed by another from Goldstein to restore the cushion, 55-39. The duo continued to trade triples throughout the period, helping the Dolphins build a game-high 23-point lead, 74-51.
Andrew Benedict and Wiggan pushed the score to 78-51 with just under 13 minutes remaining, but the Tigers refused to go away, rallying to pull within nine, 92-83, late in the game. Goldstein and Benedict responded to give CSI a double-digit lead once again, 96-83, though Holy Family trimmed the margin back to nine with 50 seconds remaining. With time on their side, Goldstein and Kone went a perfect 4--4 from the free-throw line to seal the 104-95 victory.
Goldstein led all scorers with a game-high 33 points, shooting 8-13 (62%) from three-point range. Wiggan followed with 18 points and four steals, while Poulin added 14 points on 5-6 shooting from the field and 4-5 from beyond the arc, tying for the team lead with seven rebounds. Kone finished with 13 points, and Goldstein, Chestnut, and Wiggan each dished out five assists.
The Dolphins will return to the Tank on Dec. 30 to host Franklin Pierce University in a non-conference matchup scheduled for 5:00 PM.
