Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CLANCY REACHES 1000 POINTS AS DOLPHINS TURN SLOW START INTO DECISIVE WIN, 74-52

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team turned a slow start into a decisive victory earlier tonight as they defeated Roberts Wesleyan University by a final score of 74–52.  The Dolphins pick up a much-needed conference victory to improve to 10–16 on the season and 6–8 in conference play.  The Redhawks and the night 9–14 overall and 6–7 against the ECC.  The all-time series between the two teams is now even at 4–4 and the Dolphins move back into a playoff spot with the victory. If CSI were to win their final two games, there is a strong chance that the team would host the first Division II home playoff game in the history of CSI Athletics.

The Dolphins were held scoreless for over five minutes to open the game, but from there they seized control and never looked back.  After Joey Poulin scored the first CSI basket on a putback, Messi Mallory tied the score at five with a three-pointer.  Roberts briefly took the lead a minute later, but this would be the final time that the Redhawks led in the game.  From here, the Dolphins went on a 21–0 run, including three straight three-pointers by Aaron Goldstein, Poulin, and Justin Zieris.  This put CSI in front 26–7, a lead that would grow to as large as 20 before halftime.

The Dolphins quickly extended their lead to 26 points early in the second half punctuated by a two-handed fastbreak dunk from Mallory.  The CSI defense continued to stifle the Redhawks offense and pushed their lead close to 30 points.  The Dolphins continued to shoot efficiently from the outside after an 8–15 performance from beyond the arc in the first half, and they finished the game shooting 52% from the floor and 50% from three-point range.  Four players scored in double figures and the Redhawks were held under 28% shooting as the Dolphins went on to win, 74–52.

Mallory led the Dolphins with 18 points on 8–9 from the field and blocked three shots.  Three other Dolphins, Goldstein, Zieris and Poulin, scored in double-figures.  The team also managed the 22 point victory despite a 25–6 advantage in free-throw attempts for the Redhawks.  Finally, Chris Clancy reached 1000 career points on an early three-pointer, becoming the third Dolphins to reach that milestone for his career during the last two seasons.

With the win, the Dolphins playoff chances are drastically increased, and the team fully controls their own destiny moving forward.  First up is a matchup on the road with Molloy University one week from tonight.  A win against the Lions would set up a season finale against Queens that may decide which team gets to host an opening-round playoff game.
