KEHOE DOMINANT IN SEASON DEBUT AS DOLPHINS SUCCUMB TO LATE ERRORS, 11-4

Myrtle Beach, SC - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened the 2025 season earlier today at the Cal Ripken experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as they fell to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 11–4. CSI starter Ryan Kehoe was dominant in his season debut allowing just one run in 6.0 innings of work. However, the Dolphins saw a three-run lead get away beginning with two key errors in the seventh inning.  Seven more runs in the eighth propelled Southern Connecticut to the win and improved them to 2–2 on the season. The Dolphins open the season 0-1 with a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University looming tomorrow.

The Dolphins got off to a fast start at the plate after Chris Polemeni drew a leadoff walk.  Consecutive one-out hits then loaded the bases and set the stage for the middle of the Dolphins lineup.  Following a strikeout, it was left to Jaden Waterman with the bases loaded and two away. The sophomore delivered a basis-clearing 3-RBI double into the left centerfield gap and put the Dolphins ahead, 3–0.  That score would stand until a solo home run by Jack Drewry cut the CSI lead to two runs in the bottom of the second.  Behind dominant pitching from Kehoe and Owls reliever Harry Roy, the score remained 3-1 all the way until the seventh inning.

In the top half of the frame, Polemeni extended the Dolphins lead back to three with a solo homer over over the left centerfield wall.  It was in the bottom half of the seventh inning that Kehoe exited the game and the lead began to slip away from the Dolphins.  A leadoff single got things started for the Owls before a sacrifice bunt moved that runner to second.  A walk then put two on base setting up what appeared to be a potentially inning-ending double-play ground ball.  However, the sharply hit grounder was muffed at shortstop, resulting in no outs on the play and loaded bases.  A single then drove home a run to make it 4–2 before a wild pitch brought home another run moments later.  Clinging to a one-run lead, Nick Pusinelli induced what should've been a fly out to shallow left field.  However, the ball was dropped bringing home the tying run.

The game went to the eighth tied at four, and it was in the bottom half of that inning that Southern Connecticut broke things open. Six hits in the inning, combined with three Dolphins errors, brought home seven runs.  This put the game out of reach entering the ninth, and the Owls took the win, 11–4.

Polemeni and AJ Vigliotti each had two hits in the game and Polemeni also scored two runs.  Vincent Weigele made a series of strong defensive plays at third in the game and added another hit and run scored.  Kehoe scattered 7 hits across 6.0 innings allowing just one run and striking out 7.  Of the ten runs scored against the CSI bullpen, only four were earned.  Picking up the win, Harry Roy pitched 6.0 innings for the Owls allowing just one run and four hits.

The Dolphins are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
